22/204 Test loads

I took the 26" Shilen 9T on a test run today, zero freebore reamer, New Blue bag winchester brass,
50g Nosler ballistic tip, 7 1/2 primer

3-8mph head wind

these loads are not meant to be a "Guide" for your reloading but these results only illustrate what was safe in my Shilen 9T barrel, with my old lot# of powder, my bullets, primers, etc. Loads listed may not be safe in your rifle.

28.5g of H335- 3583,3587

29.0 3655, 3650

29.5 3684, 3698

30.0 3726,3701

30.5 3851,3850

31.0 3886,3886,3892 most accurate in crazy wind I was shooting, Sub 3/8" group, all vertical Group due to wind

Private rifle range where we shoot out of a house. Crow lit on the ground by the 100 yard berm. 30.5g load blew him into three distinct pieces with massive helicopter acrobatics, crows are in season.

Next tests will be 55g and 60g Noslers, then 69g tipped match kings.

Just thinking.....we both know one forum where the resident ex-purts would be jumping all over you, calling bs and ranting "impossible", "dangerous pressure", "I wouldn't want to shooting next to you" and all the other crap we've both been subjected to in the past. Some people........

ln the Army they told the only dumb question asked is the UNASKED question. So here goes. What's the difference between a 222Remington Magnum and a 22-204?

Thanks.

The 204 ruger is basically a 222 mag improved 30 degree. The case taper is blown out straighter, and the shoulder moved forward and sharpened to 30. I had the volume increase at one time, but can't seem to track it down right now. If you look at a 223 next to a 222mag, the shoulders are nearly the same, with most of the case length difference in the long neck, similar to the original 222. The benefit of the 222mag is seating bullets out in the long neck, to utilize case capacity, while the 204 enlarges case capacity with the shorter neck.

This whole exercise strikes me as particularly dumb idea. The capacity of a 22-250 case is way more than a 204 case, necked up or not. If you want a fast .22 bullet just get at 22-250 or one of the myriad other big-case .22s.

282, the 204 holds a little more powder than the 222 Mag.

This makes me wonder just how well the 22 Grendel would work.

That's a scary thought Keith. I been wondering about that too.

And that H335 with a Rem 71/2 Primer (or CCI 450) combination has left me in near disbelief (in a good way) on quite a few occasions when looking at the target and chrony. It's an eye opener for speed and accuracy in several cartridges. JME. WD

I've brought up the fact before that if I were doing a new 224, 243 or 257 wildcat I'd do it on the Grendel case so I could use the 527, Mini Howa or Mini Mauser to build a truly petite little coyote/deer hunting rig. The 25-204 is just too long for anything but a standard short action. The 224 and 243 LBC are already here so most of the work is done already. I already have a Mini Howa in 6.5 Grendel so so that pretty much negates the need for a 257 Grendel.

221 Fireball - 222 Rem - 223 Rem - 223 AI - 222 Rem Mag - 22-204 - 22-204 w/80 VLD - 22 Dasher - 22x47 Lapua

It is virtually a clone of the 257 Kimber with out the need for intricate case forming and off the shelf dies(easily modified). With a decent tapered expander(Hornady works well for me) you can just run the brass through you FL sizing die, trim load and shoot. I use 257 Kimber load data and start low and work up. I have a 21" barrel on my rifle and 75's at 3150fps, 85's at 3000fps and 100gr at 2850fps.

It works for me, 100gr Partition

There is also another cartridge that defies all logic, that is the 22 Hawk(perhaps the 220 Hawk), that is a blown out ppc case with a double radius shoulder. 52's at 3900 are the norm with amazing accuracy. This makes me wonder just how well the 22 Grendel would work.

With the 22-204, making the dies is very simple. Run a 5.7mm drill bit in the sleeve of a 204 Ruger benchrest seater made by Forster. Exchange out the seating stem for a 22 caliber version....done.
Use Redding S full length and neck sizers.

For a coyote, ground squirrel, p. dog, rock chuck rifle, the expense of the 204 Ruger brass is a real plus.
The 220 hawk was developed by a friend of mine, Lee Andrews. He has held several world records in srbr. He has retired from shooting. Anything he says you can take to the bank.

WOW!

That is one heck of a rifle with just about indefinite barrel life!!!

This Cartridge piqued my interest some years back and I eventually built one on a Sako 85

This rifle exceeds velocities I was getting with several 22/250 and uses 8 grains less powder.

Accuracy goes against the the short powder column/short case theory and might I add I am using the standard Sako Varmint profile barrel that was a 223 before my smith ran a 204 reamer with a 22cal floating pilot then a .224 neck reamer.
