Shooting without brake

Would I have any issue with shooting without my brake on and not having a thread protector on while shooting ?
I do not have a thread protector and want to see how the rifle shoots without it, as I am not getting consistent groups, even when a certain load shot very well ( in the 3’s ) prior.
I know there could be a multitude of reasons for that, i am just wanting my question above answered for now.
Thanks

Won't hurt the gun and yes, accuracy is likely to change. It could get better or worse.... Harmonics.

Just be careful and don’t ding up the threads. No other concerns. Your load probably different brake on and brake off.

Sounds like it is self timing. If that is the case, you can also mess with turning it out 1/2 - 1 turn at a time and find the sweet spot. I listened to a interview with David Tubbs talking about it. Takes some work, but for me it was worth it.

Below is a pic of it that I meant to post above. This barrel was purchased used and another question that I want to ask is I you all think this thread job/ crown look ok ? I have no idea what a crown is supposed to look like under a brake, but the machining looks kind of rough to me, ( i was a 15 year toolmaker years ago). i did do the qtip test and it is not grabbing any fibers.

I am not sure if mine is self timing. But i took about .006 off of the brake and it is timed dead on, so no shims are needed now. This brake is not a radial one that can be set at any spot. It has the side ports and top ports, so i believe that I would only be able to rotate it out one full revolution at a time and that would get tricky with the proper amount of shims needed. But thank you golong for the interesting info. I may have to try that.

Self timed brakes have a nut.
