Well I had my right hip replaced three weeks ago so I am bored. I was looking for an easy project to keep my sanity. Here is what I have done so far.






Boring the leg went fairly well. I had to adjust the speed to reduce chatter but the 5/8" Rotabroach cut a clean hole in the cast iron. The insert is 5/8" dia x 1.25" long piece of 12L14 threaded 3/8-24. I plan to install it using LocTite 638 bearing mount.

UPDATE: I was going to attempt to make my own speed screw but after reviewing the Sinclair 1/2-20 speed screw I decided to buy one. I ordered one from Brownells for $51.74. I rethreaded my 5/8" diameter bushing to 1/2-20.

If it would ever come loose, drill & tap a small hole in the side and use a set screw that doesn't protrude.

It is an Enco (Rong-Fu 45) gear head mill.

I doubt it will ever come loose. I have been using Loctite 638 for several years now. I use their primer to prep the parts and it always sets up just fine.

I've used 638 for the last 20yrs. Only problem with the Caldwell base is the height on some ranges if you shoot a little down hill. I put them in the mill and trim a little off the bottom of each leg.

Here is the completed project:

I actually backed it out some and put blue Loctite on the threads. That allowed it to go about 1/8" lower.





I did change out the thrust bearing under the handwheel to one with separate races (Mcmaster Carr Part #6655K21). The new bearing costs $6.24.
