Hornady ATip 176 gr 30 cal

Assuming the 176's BC is as claimed, there are better choices for F-TR in that weight range. A G7 BC of 0.284 is ok for a 176 gr bullet, but nothing to write home about when F-TR shooters are routinely using 200+ gr bullets with BCs of 0.320 and higher.

A better compromise of bullet weight, BC, and cost might be the Berger 185 Hybrid. It has a G7 BC of 0.295 out of the box, which can be increased to at least 0.306 with a pointing die, an improvement not available with the A-tip bullets. The 185s will usually tune in at ~100 fps faster than a 200 gr bullet in the same barrel length, with slightly less felt recoil. The extra velocity possible with the 185, which puts it a little closer in performance to the 200 gr bullets, even though it will still not equal their performance at 1000 yd.

I realize this is still not a direct answer to your question, but as a general rule, going with a lighter bullet in F-TR such as a 176 A-tip or 185 Hybrid will put you at a ballistic disadvantage to shooters using 200 gr bullets, even though you can push the lighter bullets much faster. That is, of course, based on the assumption that the two bullets can be loaded with comparable precision. Higher BC almost always trumps the higher velocities achievable with lighter, lower BC bullets because you generally can't push them fast enough at safe operating pressure to make up the BC deficit.

Thanks Denys
With respect that wasn’t answering my question?
However one further query you could answer for me please?
Does the Hornady BC claim stack up in your experience?
You're very welcome.

1- I realize that but since no one else was either, I thought I would throw you a bone.:)

2- Sure, go ahead.

3- Yes, it does.

So the claim for the 176 should stack up then!
Plus extra Vo advantage over 185 Juggs which have done well in F/ TR as a regular fall back accurate pill.
Light recoil; fast load and efficient BC could all add up to a useful F/TR load?

as an aside I have just begun trialling the 230 ATip in my 300 Norma against the benchmark previous load with 230 Hybrids?
Initial tests look good so assuming I get similar max velocity and accuracy the extra BC will be an advantage!
