Prairie dog hunt

Anyone here who can recommend, or have had a positive experience w/, prairie gog hunting facilities in eastern Nebraska or southern South Dakota. I plan on driving from southern Va, this summer, to do so, somewhere.

P-Dogs are kinda thin in eastern Nebraska. In fact there’s not just piles of them east of the Missouri River in South Dakota. You’d be better off setting your sights a bit further west.

Don't know if you already have experience hunting there or not. I live in CO and I will not go there to shoot. Just not enough dogs and too much pressure for me. I see way more dogs in WY with far fewer folks. But I have been wrong before (many times).

No experience in southern Colorado, but buddy of mine just moved near Trinidad and has saw several on the ranches he's been around. I'll be going on up to sw Wyoming after visiting him.

I am also in Southern VA and wanted to do a prairie dog safari but decided to go with an outfitter that does dogs in spring and summer to supplement his big game business. First trip was to SD and although the weather was wet, we had a great hunt. Second trip was to WY and same experience. One word of caution is if you are short on time and have no idea where to go, finding a ranch that will allow you to hunt will be extremely hard. You will waste much of your time driving around and even when you find dogs, you don't know where to go for permission. And if you search for public land, it will likely be occupied with locals. Don't forget to see if a license is required.

I agree with the short trip(4 full days of shooting or less) finding private ground is not like 25+ years ago. You may spend 1/2 of that without firing a shot. Aside from the change of popularity of pd shooting or maybe just more reliable vehicles and changing ranching practices(leasing hunting rights,corporations,outfitting as a side business), I was west of Mission SD in early Dec and saw numerous pd towns packed with fatties. If you can locate a guide in that area it could be some good shooting. Good luck.

^ I was in eastern Wyoming in June this summer and saw big towns with few prairie dogs but got rained off the roads with hardly a sprinkle. We then headed east into western SD and saw even fewer prairie dogs.

Just for clarity, I intend to use a reputable outfitter, as long as he can provide a "target-rich" environment.

NEVER over look the Sept P. dog hunts, Never! They are fat as hogs, weather is more stable.

Just throwing this out there for everyone’s benefit. A lot of western South Dakota got hit hard with the plague 5 or 6 years ago and has not recovered. Dog towns that I shot in for 30 + years died out and are still dead today. Be careful where you go, there may be few targets over large areas. This includes ground the outfitters are selling access to.

I used to shoot them west of Kearney on private farm land. Not what I’d call “target rich” even that far west. I just can’t imagine the eastern side of the state having much volume.

I too am wanting to travel from KY out west for about a week, and do some PD shooting. I would rather compensate a rancher that has varmit issues and do some private shooting verses paying $$$ to a guide. I am looking for somewhere around Kansas, Montana, or Nebraska. I however, am open to other more populated areas/ states. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
