Peterson CTG Co. 6mm BR Norma Brass - Looking for Feedback from Users

LA50SHOOTER

Sworn To Protect The Constitution.
Good Day,
- I've done a search & didn't really find anything informative. - I'm looking for feedback on the Peterson Cartridge Company 6mm BR Norma Brass. - Accuracy & Competition shooters please share your experiences.

- I just ordered 200 pcs of this brass and my plans are to try 100 in a straight 6mm Norma BR that is a 0.269 neck (So will be neck turning & doing the full prep routine, but will leave the pockets & flash holes alone providing their okay & then uniform pocket depth only after 1 firing).
The other 100 will get fire-formed in a 6mm BRAI with a 0.269 neck as well.
Looking to shoot 103 - 110 gr. bullets in both barrels in competition (LR BR) rifles.

Wondering how case capacity is versus Lapua ? And how well the Peterson Brass is holding up.
I paid a few bucks more than what Lapua costs but I want to give it a try.

- Thanks - Ron -

Following, I know of a couple people trying these but I haven't heard anything past fire forming stage yet.

I used the Peterson 6br brass in a 100 yd benchrest club match Dec 7th. Shot my personal best and won match. They are good by me. Next is a 300 yd match know more then. Perk

Thank You @Perk - Much appreciated & look forward to hearing more when it comes available.

I just bought a couple of boxes. Got them in yesterday. After seeing the way they are packed, I will never buy Lapua again. I won't be able to shoot them for a week or two because I'm working on the bees, but I was very impressed. They come in a nice ammo box (like the ones you put your loads in) with a thick piece of foam rubber on top. No more dents or scratches or anything else. If it shoots half as good as it looks it will be a winner.

I've purchased Peterson brass in the past and yes they do arrive very well packed in plastic cases I used for the loaded rounds. Very nice touch!

However, their prices are higher than Lapua, the market they're trying to break into. What's with that? 89 cents for Lapua, 92 cents for Peterson in 6mmBR Norma.

Yes, I agree and I've also purchased Peterson brass in a few other calibers before the 6mm BR. - I'm just looking to see how it "sizes-up" in comparison to Lapua which can be had for 86.95 + shipping from the right vendor.
In particular, I'm looking for case capacity comparisons, charge weight performance comparisons, if one outshoots another under best developed & obtained loadings, - that kind of feedback. - And I realize that it somewhat "specific" & possibly perceived as "obscure" by some folks.

Thanks for your feedback Texas10, - Kind Regards, - Ron -

I have played with the new 6br Peterson brass in a couple improved Chambers I'm impressed to the fact it gives me the same basic accuracy that the Lapua brass does can't say anything about brass life just put it this way I ordered 8 more boxes the primer pockets are maintaining no loose primer pockets.

Peterson vs. Lapua, I am an equal opportunity praise'r and complainer. They both have pros and cons. The only BR brass I have is Lapua, but it went straight to 6 Dasher so not much help on your eval.

Regarding the other comments, don't be confused by the box or by Grafs' prices. Peterson sells brass in 50 pack in the plastic box (which is not that great of a box - 2 of mine were cracked on arrival), and they sell the same brass in 500 piece bulk (loose pack). They both (plastic box and bulk pack) shoot the same. Graf's, for their part, are not the cheapest for many things. They were the original "official" Peterson distributor and have yet to lower their prices. Blue Collar Reloading does not have the BR up on their site yet but I am guessing they can get it. Give them a call. They will certainly be less money.

Thank You for Your feedback, I wish that I'd of thought of that before placing my order from Graf's, but if I need more then I'll surely do that as the folks at Blue Collar have about the best prices that I've found & I order with them frequently.

That's excellent to hear Stan, - I appreciate you sharing your findings thus far. - Keep me posted as things progress there on your end.
- I'm not looking to eliminate Lapua (as I have a bunch of it already) 6mm BR brass, just trying to have the best mouse trap possible. So I'm willing to give Peterson a try.

The one poster here was discussing the pricing at Graf & Sons I get dealer pricing my cost on a hundred pieces of brass 2 50 count boxes is about 79 dollars a hundred plus shipping regardless of what he thinks about the plastic boxes at least they are in plastic boxes of 50 so you can load and go.

I purchased 200 Peterson 6BR brass back in October.
Plan is to shoot 100 for a 6BR No turn neck and the other 100 in a no turn 6BRAI.

I had a new 6BRAI barrel - no turn .272 neck, so I figured this would be a great time to try Peterson 6BR brass. As mentioned, brass came in nice plastic boxes, none of the necks were dinged, and necks were all factory chamfered. I checked a small sampling of necks using a ball micrometer and they all seemed pretty uniform in thickness {granted I'm probably not the best as measuring neck thickness} - so I decided not to skim the necks and shoot them as is out of the box.

Weighed 200 pieces as an exercise to see how uniform the cases were. As noted earlier, Peterson brass weighs more than Lapua brass (weighs in the 126-127gr range):
  • 188 weighed between 134.0-135.0 gr (more than 50% weighed 134.0-134.3)
  • 2 weighed 131.x gr
  • 5 weighed 132.x gr
  • 5 weighed 133.5-133.8 gr

Kept the 12 outlier cases separate.

Took 94 cases and the 12 outlier cases -> fireformed them to 6BRAI. FF'ing went smoothly.

After FF, loaded up rounds for load development. All the loaded rounds measured .2680.

Since Peterson brass weighs more than Lapua brass - maybe the internal volume would be slightly less? That was my initial thought but didn't have a way to verify. Figured I'd shoot it and I'll find out.

Ran a ladder at 550 yards and noticed that 30.0gr H4895 already yielded speeds in the 2920 range. Groups printed small. Normally I would have to run more powder in Lapua cases to reach the same 2920 speed range. But since this is a new barrel - maybe it's the barrel? See below for answer.

Picked a powder charge and ran seating depth tests @ 550 yards. Found a few seating depths that shot small.

IMG_7195.JPG IMG_7197.JPG

Also decided to load and test a few outlier cases (same powder/primer/seating depth) to see what the speed difference is (if any).

The cases in the 134.0 gr range averaged 2923 fps.
I shot 4 [where's the 5th case? I sacrificed one case to AMP Aztec] of the 132.x gr cases and measured speeds of: 2909, 2917, 2914 and 2917. Seems a wee bit slower than the main lot of brass - enough of a difference to keep separate? You'll have to decide that.....

I also loaded 4 Lapua cases with the same powder charge/primer/seating depth and these 4 cases shot: 2890, 2906, 2901, 2905. Definitely a volume difference that reflects in lower speeds with the same powder charge.

Looks like I can shoot Peterson brass with a wee bit less powder over a comparable loaded Lapua case for a given speed - at least in my rifle/barrel combination. Looks to be a .2 - .3gr difference (H4895) in my setup.

As far as I can tell in my limited testing, Peterson brass shoots as well as my Lapua 6BRAI cases (note: all my Lapua 6BRAI cases are neck turned for a reamer with a .268 neck). I can't tell if Peterson is 'better' - but definitely an alternative.

YMMV

As long as performance is comparable, I’ll support the USA owned and operated company. Even if there’s a small price differential.
+1 on the American, got 400 of the 6CM and like them, when I use up my stash of lupua 6BR I will go to the Peterson....

I have 200 pieces, and out of the box they were all within 1.3 grains IIRC, and 198 of them within 1.1 grains.

They seem to be around a grain less water capacity vs lapua, and Ive found it seems to take ~.6-.7 grains less powder from your go to lapua case load to get it to shoot again.

Fire form load is usually 29.6 gr h4895, and with Peterson I had to drop it to 29.1 gr h4895. I usually shoot around 31.14 gr of rl15 with 105 hybrids in a formed case br-improved, and I found it to be happy around 30.44 grains.

I have two test pieces that I have fire formed and +9 firings that I left the standard lapua load in them (31.14 grains) just to see how it might affect case life. They primer pockets are still nice. Seems to be very nice brass to me.

I purchased 200 Peterson 6BR brass back in October. I purchased it from Brownell's using their 10% coupon + free shipping.
Plan is to shoot 100 for a 6BR No turn neck and the other 100 in a no turn 6BRAI.

As for price, Graf's and Brownell's both sell the 50 pack for $45.99 ($91.98/100). Wait for Brownell's 10% off coupon and you can get Peterson 6BR brass for $82.78/100 + free shipping. Brownell's had a 12%/13% off coupons after Thanksgiving which brought Peterson brass down to ~$80/100 + free shipping. So there are ways to obtain Peterson cases for less than Lapua cases.

Excellent Post with some Very good information Sir,
This is what I've been looking for. - You provided solid information based on results that you obtained in actual testing. With some solid information. - This presents a positive outlook for me and the testing that I'll be doing. - I hope that I'm able to get similar results.

Many Thanks - Ron -
