Bc'z, thank you, that is very informative. I greatly appreciate you sharing the techniques used for creating a work of art. This helps us all learn. I had asked another member through a pm on some bedding techniques and never got a response. I think your thread says a lot about your character when you are willing to share such information.

Also for starting this thread.
It will hopefully keep the chatter down in the how to thread.
I'll answer any questions one might have to help them achieve success in their project.

After this stock completed I'll do a all rattle can job using SPRAYMAX rattle cans on a Tupperware stock, Remington take off.

I'm told I have a wooden stock or 2 coming from Wisconsin, when they arrive I'll go over using aneline dyes and the difference in process. Wooden stocks are my favorite.

I like the laminated stock.
I'll be spraying @SPJ laminated dog tracker in a week or so and go over differences in sand paper for wood using simtech products.

Great thread,gives me hope. Thanks for taking the time to show how the pros do it . I can see right from the start I need to start using more filler and there is more than one grit of sandpaper . I always start out with coarse,and end up with worn out coarse .

Are you be willing to share what filler you use? In the past for small areas like trigger guards, bolt handle & ejection ports I have used Evercoat polyester glazing putty.

I'm using upol finish putty, "DOLPHIN GLAZE"
half the price of overcoat, comes in a squeezable bag, I'll also blend it with my 3m bondo to smooth it out.
I'll get you a picture I just dropped cammies in washer.

Wood stocks are by far my favorite as well. Real wood, not laminates. Laminates are easy and ive used plenty of gloss spraymax. It’s really easy to finish out spraymax and then buff back to a satin if desired. The spraymax lasts a few days once mixed if you put the can in the fridge.

1/16" would be max, anything heavier I'd use standard filler or blend the dolphin glaze with heavy filler.
SPRAYMAX actually has a matt clear, and a 2k primer surfacer.
Doing a rattle can stock is going to be fun for me as I've never done it that way.

Thanks for that info, that’s about what I thought. Yeah, spraymax does make a matte and their 2k primers are actually pretty good. I’ve used rattle can 2k black and 2k matte clear on vehicle plastics. (Windshield cowl, window moldings, door handles). If you haven’t used spraymax before, you’ll be impressed with how it can lay down and how little it takes to develop a technique. I don’t bother with matte finish on stocks. If you need to correct after final coat - you lose the matte.

Maybe not but you have the satisfaction of mastering a skill. Much appreciate your willingness to share your hard learned "trade secrets". Money helps but it sure isn't everything in life and fame is fleeting at best.
