V-V 165 for 6.5 PRC

V-V 165 for 6.5 PRC ,can't find any Re#26 or H1000 . Would this be a good powder to try in a 6.5 PRC shooting 140-147 bullets ? I've read that the slower 500 series like 560 565 and 570 are barrel burners ?

You can use the VVN-165 as it's a cooler burning powder. You might check with VV to see if they have any data developed yet. I keep N-165 around for this very reason, medium capacity cartridges with heavier bullets and it works quite well. I think you will better off starting somewhere about 53.0 gr. and working up slowly watching for signs of pressure. My load is fairly mild at about 55.0 gr. But this is my rifle, barrel and loading. I shoot with DBM with an OAL of 2.925".

Any powder/bullet/cartridge can be considered to be a 'barrel burner' based on a dozen different factors. Early factory barrels mislabeled some cartridges as barrel burners simply because the barrel steel was soft and no one thought to check it. New powder formulations, better steel in barrels and knowing how to control your rate of fire all help with slowing down the proliferation of low quality information.

Actually, the VV 500 series powders are faster usually than the 100 series. VV 100 series powders are single base while the 500 series is double base with the inclusion of the 'go fast juice' nitroglycerine to the nitrocellulose.

The 500 series powder might be slower when compared to the lower numbered powders such as the VVN-140, and VVN-150.

I was going back over some notes from earlier this year because I was shooting a 21" barrel on my bolt action competition rifle. For this rifle it was important to try to keep the barrel short so I could add the suppressor. Here I shot the 6.5 PRC with Warner Flatline 121 gr. bullets over Re-23. Very efficient and basically a flat shooting combination.

For speed try some N560 behind a 147 but n165 should work very nice, n560 also works a charm in a creed with a 147. The 5 series are supposed to be harder on barrels but they are fantastic powders. I use n160, n540, n550 and n560 and im very very happy with how the 5 series operate

I love N560-N565 in my 6.5 PRC N555 is just a few feet faster than H4350 in my 6mm Creedmoor.

I run 147's with N165 in lapua brass in my rifle. My load is 53gr and it runs around 2900fps. Its a mild load in my rifle, but you might want to start lower.

PS. I personally have used the N-500 series powders for years and not noticed any unusual throat wear in my rifles.
