Micro slick vs melonite?

I am looking at getting a couple of BAT actions, and one of the options that is being given is that instead of having them melonited by BAT, to get them micro slick'ed instead.

Has anyone got experience with both of these? I know melonite is just a brand name for a particular salt bath nitride process/ product, and it works by chemically changing the makeup of the surface, as opposed to micro slick, which is a surface coating. But have no hands on experience with micro slick to compare it.
 
Thanks Butch, thats my thinking as well. Would take a lot to wear through the part that melonite has changed. Plus, I like the colour of melonite, over the colour of micro slick

Wearing thru SBN is highly unlikely, surfaces normally end up at about 90 Rockwell and penetration is about .007. Also doesn't rust.

Yes, but Bat doesn't recommend it and there is no need for it on chrome molly. They do however highly recommend Melonite for stainless to help prevent galling. My first 3 bats were stainless. sold one, sent the other 2 back for melonite. They did a fantastic job. My last Bat was Chrome molly, no more stainless for me, it's simply a work of art, the blueing is beautiful.

Why is it Bat does not recommend meloniting chromoly actions?

Chromemoly is hard enough and galling isn't nearly as much of a concern as is stainless. They explained it to me as stainless is "gummy". I'm sure it can be explained much better/technical by a metallurgist, which I am not.. after all, why would you take a beautiful polished stainless action and turn it to a dull blue, galling lling is the only reason I can think of. I have 2 stainless BAT's, both have been melonite, the last one i got was chrome molly, it's simply a thing of beauty, from here on out they'll all be chrome molly

I understand the benefits of melonite on stainless. I was asking why Bat does not recommend it on chromoly.

Or are you saying it simply has no benefits on chromoly and is just a waste of time? I would think it would at least offer better rust resistance than bluing does. Just trying to understand the cons if there are any.

Don't quote me on this, I believe they were concerned on the heat during the process if i remember correctly. It would be best to call them or talk to a metallurgist on this subject. I am certainly not an expert in this field, I simply did what Daryle recommended, which is good enough for me.

Yep, just running the bolt can wear microslic off the knob. I stopped offering it as well.

Physical Vapor Deposit and melonite are the bee’s knees.

I don’t do any PVD. I have been in contact with a couple manufacturers of the equipment and it’s very expensive. Right now I’m crunching numbers to see if it makes sense and how to market it properly.

I did send some bolt carriers off to Richter Precision. I would recommend them.
