20Br vs 20 Practical

I need another rifle(don't we all) to p.d. hunt with, l got a great deal on a Kreiger 204 1-11 twist 1.25 diameter barrel. I own a 6br and a 22br so l have everything need to reload. A 20br is pushing 220 swift velocity. Is this the best way to go?

6BR is the easiest on barrels. Has anyone made a 22BRX? I like the 204 ballistics. I forget the differnce in speed between the different 204 versions.

The 20 Practical AKA 20-223 is a great cartridge, is a simple straight neck down from 223 brass and they always seem to shoot very well. Another 20 cal that is an excellent little cartridge, feeds smooth as silk through any kind of bottom metal, also is a simple straight neck down, would be the 20-222. I'm partial to the 20-222 because I have one, but they're a great little high volume shooter.

On a standard trip for prairie dogs or Sage rats, I pack between 8 and 10 rifles. I used to take 220 Swift's, 22 250's ,223's . They don't make it into the truck anymore. And I usually only take one 204. 20 practical / Tactical or and 20 vartarg are my main rifle's of choice now. If you want a 20 br just because you want one , I think that's great. But for high-volume shooting 20 practical all day long.

This build would be for p.d. hunting only, so barrel life will not be a major factor. I do take a 204 with me when l go. I will look into the pros/cons of the VarTarg. Thanks for everyone's feedback.

If barrel life is of no great concern and you want a hot rod 20 Cal. take a look at building a 20-250. I actually had my 20-250 built before I had my 20-222 built. The two definitely serve a different purpose, at least they do for me, but both are a lot of fun.

High volume shooting and easy peasy to make and load for, my vote would be 20-223 AKA 20 Practical or 20-222, for a hot rod 20 cal I'd go 20-250. Lapua brass available for all three and making brass is a one pass through the die, load and start shooting.

Oops sorry, I kinda missed reading this post.

If your're looking to add a new rifle to the stable and you already have a 204, though all the above are great choices, to keep things simple and easy, especially for high volume shooting, I'm not so sure I just wouldn't have another 204 made. Otherwise, I'd go with something a fair bit bigger, like a 20-250, or stay with your first choice and build a 20 BR.
