Winchester Staball 6.5 Powder

Winchester (Hodgdon) has released a new ball powder, Winchester Staball 6.5. It claims to be temp stable and has a copper fouling eliminator. Has anyone seen or heard any more details on it? Their webpage and press release have just the basics. See link below.

I know a few people using the original test lot and I'll tell you, the numbers they're getting consistently is pretty amazing. Should be right at home in the Dasher/ GT/ X47L

Go to the Hodgdons on line reloading. They have data listed on several cartridges....6 CMoor, 6GT. 6 Dasher. I only checked a few.

Load wise, the data for Staball and Superformance show similar numbers.

I didn’t notice it in their burn rate chart. If they could list it near some known powders, then playing with cartridges they don’t list is far less risky. Has anyone seen a chart with this new powder included yet?

Powder Valley is the only place I can find it listed. It's out of stock of course but priced per pound $23.85 - 174.50. Hogdon load data has loads starting with the .223 and all the way up to 375 H&H Magnum. Be interesting to read the early reports

I just checked it out on the Hodgdon reload data site. Seems to be comparable to the IMR 4350 I am currently using and just a bit slower than H4350.

Saw it advertised, but in the smaller calibers, starting with .223 R it only seems like it is for heavy bullets.
Would like to know how it might work in the smaller/mid range 20 cals and lighter bullets in the .224's . I guess time and someone trying it will tell.

Powder Valley now has 1 pounders in stock at $25.25 a pound and 8 pounders at $185.95. My powder shelf is good at the moment and I won't pay Hazmat on a single pound but I am curious to see some range reports and would buy a pound if it were available locally just to play with

Not as long as Alliant's AR-Comp, RL-16 & RL-23 and I haven't seen them posted on a burn rate chart yet either.
Someday / year they will get updated lol.

I've been thinking about this a lot in the last couple weeks since I became aware of it. It will probably boil down to where the accuracy nodes fall with this powder in terms of pressure/velocity. Assuming the temperature stability is as good as is claimed, if the accuracy nodes are located in similar spots to existing powders with regard to pressure/velocity, especially at the "high" nodes, I'm not sure how much of an advantage it would be. If the pressure issues (i.e. poor brass life) and velocity issues (i.e. jacket failures) aren't improved, it won't be much different than what we already use. However, if it allows loads to be tuned at the right spots, it might really be the cat's meow. Only testing will tell.
