Vartarg Question

We're currently driving 40s @ 3850 with lapua brass and AA2200 in a few rifles. All of them have several kills over 800yd on ground hogs and prairie dogs. On one of my barrels I've got shy of 3500rd on it and it'll still tag an 8" plate at 650yd on command.
I have to call BS on this one. If you're ever in South Dakota please stop by. I'd love to see that magic rifle and run a few rounds across my chronograph.

The only thing that would make my BS meter peg out even further is if they said, "and that's with no pressure signs"!!! LOL

It's not like there aren't lots of other people that post the same unbelievable velocities and claim no pressure, too.

14 reloads on this lot of brass.....

there are a handful of people on this site that get 4000fps with 32's and 3850 with 40's with 15 firings on Lapua brass. if you search this forum it's already been debated thoroughly. I am not running lapua yet but someday I will. with RP brass, I got to 3975 with 20.8grs of 2200 32vmax. I have reduced the load to 20.3 because of pressure signs in really hot weather. I don't doubt they get that velocity, but most people don't.

Why not go 20 practical, same brass, less work, same bullets, more velocity potential.
I always find this interesting...I neck down 223 brass to 20 Practical, load it and shoot it...I neck down 221 Fireball brass to 20VT, load it and shoot it...cannot figure out why it is said that the 20VT is more work.
Same argument for the 20Tac...run it thru form die, load it and shoot it.
The so called "fireforming" of the 20VT or 20Tac is so miniscule, I have never had to change my load.

I think he must be talking about making 20vt from 223, because that is at least three more pulls on the press handle and neck trimming and also trimming the length.

I also like the 20 Practical improved and shoot it often, but on a pivot field for shooting hundreds of ground squirrels at a sitting, the 20 VT is much more pleasant to shoot and used half the powder, per shot and less recoil.. A place for both.

I dont think he is, my understanding is neck down 223 brass to 20 cal and just shoot it in a 20 prac or tac. Same thing with 221 fireball just neck it down and shoot it in a 20VT.

What doesn't get mentioned often enough in these threads is barrel length. If you post always make a point to tell us the barrel length so we can gauge velocity by that. Note that I did...

Big difference between what AA2200 gives vs H4198 and barrel length plays a part in that.

I was agreeing with Gary, I guess I should rephrase and say, In my opinion the only time 20vt is more work is when making them from 223.

My 11 twist Krieger is fabulous with Berger 35s and 40s and Hornady 40gr Amax's, haven't tried many others yet. (Dogtown bullets from Midway are crap -- meplats are packed with tumbling media).

The reported velocity numbers are all over the board. I'm getting 3800+ on the Berger 40s with 17.9 grains of H4198 and 3950+ on the Berger 35s, measured with a LabRadar. A buddy's VT comes up 150-200fps slower on 19+gr of powder. Both guns have fabulous accuracy. Forget about chasing the speed and enjoy the thrill of watching the bullets hit home.
