Colt discontinues AR15 production for consumer market

Who of "us shooters"? The kind of shooter who understands what Colt makes and why and understands that when he buys a COLT AR he is getting the only true "mil spec" AR avaialble, since COLT owns the TDP for the AR-15 (licensed to FN), and the fact that the COLT AR is utterly reliable and gets the job done.

The kind of shooter who does not need to be buffaloed with baloney by slick marketing from other AR makers who will try to convince you their ARs are somehow any better (talking to you BCM), etc.

The kind of shooter who actually has researched and done his homework on the AR-15 and understands the COLT 6920 and iterations of it remains today (until recently) the very best choice for your first "go to" AR.

That kind of shooter.

I've put tens of thousands of rounds through various COLT ARs, most recently my M4A1 SOCOM.

All this talk about "better" brands is just that...talk...unless/until you start to take a look at genuinely innovative AR rifles, like LMT's line of AR rifles.

If their so good the govt. wouldn't have cancelled their colt contract awhile back. Only colt's pleading and begging for their employees not to lose their jobs AND a promise to start making back to mil-spec persuaded the govt. to reinstate their contract. I wouldn't trust them.

There's nothing special about Colt AR-15s, that is correct. Nor should there be. They work. Period.

As for "sear blocks" and "large pins" ... your information way out of date. LOL.

What matters to me is that my 24" SS free floated bbl'd CAR-A3 is a victim of BS unwarranted/unmandated alterations that preclude improving the trigger pull without adding another $200+ trigger to shoot anywhere close to my Aero build with a Velocity trigger.
It has been hamstrung for the (now) decades I have been shooting her, as better triggers are a relatively recent delopement.
Do you have any insight as to how to remove the blind hole roll pin holding the sear block in?
I special ordered another Velocity trigger, but it will not fit without moving the block, then reinstalling the block.
GotRDid.

A big punch and hammer. The big pin holes are the issue. I havent seen a colt with the block since like 2000. Think it came out in 1994- the range nazis havent got into ar rifles at that point. Me and my crew used them for coyote hunting. We were looked upon as some type of militants back then

The block is held in place by a small roll pin, will take image.
GotRDid.
I have one. Here is a pic of it removed i fount on the innerweb. Most folks glue in the side pins. They have a big tapered head. The block is hard as a rock. If you decide to have it milled out be sure to warn them. Adco removes them for like $40

It was my understanding that government does not use or issue the "mil specs" on bids; that it is privileged information to bidders only. It IS the most misued and overworked phrase on the internet.

Colt owns the proprietary TDP for the AR-15. That, to be very precise, is what makes COLT "mil spec." They license the right to use the AR TDP to FN. Colt builds all its AR-15s using the TDP.

Any vendor providing parts/components to Colt uses the TDP as well, but only for Colt.

I agree it is often a phrase that is misused by companies building AR-15 rifles. The only company that makes "mil spec" AR-15s, according to the TDP, is Colt and FN, which licenses the TDP from Colt.

And, any company manufacturing parts or components for Colt AR use the TDP, which Colt provides.

Of course, to be absolutely precise, ONLY the select-fire Colt AR-15 rifles are 100% mil spec (since the military requires and receives select-fire ARs).

And finally, this is not to say that other companies making AR rifles are building ARs of lesser quality, in fact, for instance, KAC and LMT provide AR rifles that are better than the TDP, they have improved upon them.

But just to keep the facts straight re. mil spec...well, there you go.

This is a helpful article on the subject:

Well said over on a forum dedicated to the AR rifle:

The majority of consumers buying ARs want something cheap that looks cool. Want to sell an AR put a cheesy rollmark on it and mount some gun show trash to it. Colt builds plain functional weapons it makes more sense for them to sell to military and law enforcement than to try and take market share from the PSA/Anderson/Yeet cannon crowd. Why should Colt compete in a race to the bottom? I highly doubt this is some ethical posturing or political move. Its just money.

Probably the above was said, by someone dedicated to a couple of Colt AR’s in their closet.

At this point, in my opinion, LMT is making the "best" AR-15 rifle. But there are many good choices and options out there. My "go to/workhorse" 5.56 AR is a Colt M4A1 SOCOM (obviously the civilian model). My go-to AR-10 is a LMT MWS in .308 (thinking of getting a 6.5 Creed barrel for it.

Re. the M4A1 ... I use a LMT Optimized LMT BCG in my M4 and a Geissele buffer spring system in it and a Wilson AR triggger.

The AR is the grown man's lego system. :)
