Savage 12 FV

what are your opinions on the Cabelas exclusive savage 12 fv in either 223 or 6.5 creedmoor ?

A friend got one in 6.5 about a year ago, impressive for sure, very accurate.
He replaced the stock, the factory one is kind of light with a narrow forend.

I wish I would have bought one a few years ago when they were on sale.... Doesn't come with the accu-stock but Boyd's makes some nice ones cheap enough.... Other than that I think it would be a great shooter as long as you get one with a decent barrel , be sure and look it over very well and don't be afraid to ask to see 2-3..... That's what I do when I pick something up from Cabela's because they normally have more than a few to pick from.... I have kicked myself for awhile for not getting one back then because of the sale and then rebate from Savage it would have been like $269....

Ive bought at least 8 of those rifles. Cant go wrong in either caliber, accurate and do the job. Pal has 2 of them in 6.5C, me in .223 and had them in 22-250.

I have 3 (204R,223 & 22/250), all shoot hand loads sub MOA with the tupperware stock. Have not found a good reason to change the stock other than for looks.

the barrels r easy enough to swap. Find the action w the bolt face you want. Double check the spacing on the action screws. The older ones have many more stock options. The trigger upgrades, just choose your poison. For a first long range custom project I don't think you can find more fun. Enjoy. mike in ct

I bought two. If you get the right price, keep the action and toss the rest. Shilen sells pre chambered barrels and Boyds sells great stocks.

I've bought a half dozen or so when Savage was dumping their excess inventory back in 2017/2018. I could easily sell the new take off barrel, put on a decent one, and change out the trigger group and have a very accurate rifle for not much coin.

As far as accuracy out of the box, one of the 12FV's I bought in 223 rem. sits in a EABCO thumbhole stock, but is otherwise unmodified and has put 5 into a .068 group at 100 yds with my very new to the sport son doing the shooting. But with this half blind nut behind the bolt, it typically produces groups in the 2's and 3's.

I have a model 112 fvss by savage. It is the same as the model12 but the long action is three digits, the short action two. Mine was made before the accutrigger and I hear the accutrigger is great and have fondled them. They are definitely an improvement. Mine is chambered in 25-06 Remington. I have had 4 one shot kills where the deer didn't even wiggle an ear. That is the cartridge. The important part is this. With MY handloads for this rifle. By that I mean I know what it likes, but I've heard almost every other 12,112 is the same way. This is the truth, I'd gain nothing by lying. My rifle will shoot 75,85,90,100,115,117,120 grain bullets well under an inch per five. Anything under 100 grains will do 1/2" or under anytime the conditions are calm. However I'm a little bit peeved that I can't break into the .200 inch category. I get a lot of .300's groups. Oh well, it's only a factory savage. These are varmint weight rifles, not good for carrying. Savage makes other rifles that are lighter. They are very accurate. Hope this helps you out.

It's a great deal if you can get it under $300 like some people did.

If it's just the basis of a project, I like the small ejection port of the Axis. It's more rigid which should make it nearly impossible to twist the receiver and throw off the scope. The downside of the Axis is that stock and chassis choices are limited and you should face the receiver to use a model 10 style recoil lug if you are going to change the barrel.

I got my Axis with Accu-trigger for $250. I'm putting it in a chassis with a folding stock that adjusts for LOP, kant and comb height, with a fluted bolt, upgraded bolt handle, match grade barrel and a nice sloped scope rail for around $1,200 total.

I could have got a factory "precision rifle" for the same or less money but not in the caliber I want (284 Winchester) with a better than factory barrel.

If you want to keep the factory barrel, I think the standard Axis models have either a heavy barrel or an Accu-trigger, not both. You might be able to order an Axis with both from Savage but you pay MSRP if they do that for you.

I've been wanting an Axis project for a while and things finally fell in to place.

If it wasn't cheap, I would have stuck to Remington 700 pattern stuff but custom 700s need so much labor that I think it's a lot easier to start with a higher quality clone action for a full custom.

Any way, that's how I chose and as tempting as the 12FV was, I like the Axis better.

The beauty of the Savage bolt is that even if bolt face size isn't right, you can buy a new bolt head with proper measurements and in a few minutes swap them out. Other brands require you go buy an entire bolt body vs just the face end.

I bought one in .308 for $269 when they had the $100 rebate. I put it in a Bell and Carlson stock and have been really happy with it. They come with the varmint accutrigger which is nice too. I shot this group with it last week shooting 208 ELD-M's.
