.284 H4831SC Max Load??

Hello everyone,
.284 Win. I changed powder from H4350 to H4831SC. I'm up to 57g at 2723 fps with a 26" barrel 168 Bergers. No pressure signs. I would like to at less get to 2800 fps. Is anyone else having to go this high of a load? I may end up at 58g to get to 2800.

Hodgdon website claims they get 2807 FPS out of a 24” barrel with a maximum load of 58gr of H4831 using a Winchester primer and a Sierra 168. So I’d think you could get that with a 26” barrel. Slow barrel, slow lot of powder, your gun if different than next guys, all that stuff. However, when I work up a load using a ladder test I usually try to find out where my stopping point is by using the pressure signs of hard bolt lift(is this a bolt gun), smiley faces on brass, flattened primers. You indicated you’re not at this point. If you are certain of no pressure signs, I’d keep going until you see them and then you would know what is safe for your gun combo. I’m talking about just loading up one round each while increasing powder charge by .3gr until you get pressure signs in order to see if velocity is achievable while shooting over chrono. Accuracy may or may not be there but that’s not what you’re asking. Good luck in your quest.

You do not need a maximum load, shoot what ur rifle likes. I am using 53.3 h4831sc, 2790fps, my rifle also likes speeds up to 2850 but no need to push it if it likes 2790. Shoot what ur rifle likes.

@ 53g my rifle shoots around 2550 fps. But I understand what your saying.

Anthony, what is your sized neck diameter? I find H4831 needs a little more neck tension to get the velocity up there with a lighter bullet. Consider H4350, RL-16, or VV N160.

Thanks for the reply,
I was using H4350 but H4831 groups a good bet better. Neck tension is .001. I just got to find a node. I'm at 2780 with 58g and 2830 with 58.5g. ES is around 9 with 58.5g and around 17 with 58g. I may try .002 neck tension at 58g and see what happens

Careful. It could cause a spike in pressure. Underline could
In reloading if you change one thing you change everything.

No two guns are the same. Reading the above, one shooter is getting 2790 with 53.3 grains. Your load is 57 grains and can't even make that velocity. Let your gun tell you which load shoots best. May take 58.5 to get optimum accuracy. You may not get to your magic number but 4831 is an accurate powder just not the fastest powder option.
