Calling all AR15 guys.... what caliber?..

What caliber...

Looking for a fun gun... I want HARD HITTING... short range... hog gun... Im after power here, nothing else... 50 to 100 yard absolute hammer... probably run hollow point pistol mag bullets for harder hitting... (think 460 S&W.. if I could put that in an AR thatd be a ticket)

Kicking around:

300 HAMR
450 bushmaster
50 beowolf
350 legend
458 socom

I cant think of any others that fit this bill...

Which is the most powerful? Ive never shot any of them...

Just found a 45 raptor for AR10... basically a straight walled 308 case... that may pack a punch...

I built a .300 HAM'R upper with an 18" Wilson barrel. Busted my elbow before I could shoot it, but the doc says that I can start shooting again in the next month, so I will find out how well it does then. The only load data now is from Wilson using CFE Black and AA1680 powder. Wilson says that the 130 gr Speer is the best one he has used on hogs, and having shot over 200 of them testing this cartridge, I'd say that he would know. I have loads worked up for the Speer 130 as well as 125 gr Nosler AB, Speer 150 gr Gold Dot and 125 gr Sierra. Wilson claims velocities matching the .30 WCF, which if that pans out will be pretty amazing for a cartridge based upon the .223.

I chose the HAM'R over the other's that you listed because the cartridge case can be made very easily from .223/5.56 brass, of which I have a large quantity. Starline does make the brass which is available from Wilson. I also like the fact that it should feed better than the 7.62x39. I have one of those uppers and there is only one magazine that I have found that feeds worth a flip, and that is from C Products, and I am unsure if they are even in business anymore. Besides, the HAM'R, according to Wilson, will outperform the 7.62x39 by a couple of hundred FPS, and definitely has a larger bullet selection and weight range. The bolt face is also a standard 5.56 rather than something larger, with the attendant possibility of shearing lugs.

IMO, the .300 HAM'R should be one of the most effective deer and hog cartridges in the AR platform if the results from Wilson pan out. I'll find out this Fall.

Guys.... its still NOT about "knock down power." Thats Hollyweird bovine scat.

Its still about shot placement. A 223 to the brain / CNS is gonna be a 1 shot, game over.

I always interpreted knock down power as slang for delivered energy. I agree the .223 will work. There are better rounds to use on hogs, though.

More to your point though, guy proficient with his .223 is still better than a guy scared to shoot his 50 Beowulf.

Yup. And as the video shows above....UNTIL you get to a 12 gauge slug, no bullet really delivers much energy at all. Certainly not enuf to literally knock anything off its feet. They mostly sizzle right thru the target.

See the video above.

"Every action has an equal and oposite reaction." Any fired bullet that would knock its target off its feet would ALSO knock the shooter off his feet.

That's why they call them LAWS of physics. :)
