Rangefinder

But Nikon and vortex offer a 4000 at the same price. What's up?
I don't know. I started with Bushnell (2), then Leupold (2) and then three Leicas, 1200, 1600 and the 2400. Any manufacturer can slap a number on a model but do they work at the advertised distance on an animal or in crap weather? There are quite a few posts on what's available. Just hit the search box for the ones that interest you.

same for me.

Ok I'll search again but, there has to be some Spectrum Divergent Refraction Power Output number that tells the real truth. You know the (SDRPO#)???? Mike

Mike , my experience with older LRF's was that they would Range roughly 3/4 of what they advertised ( on real animals or rocks or dirt mounds ) and that included a Leica 1200 which did not like bright Sunlight . I only shoot in good weather , but I have read that Leicas don't perform well in Rain or Snow ..... don't know if that is true . Some other considerations are response times and the Eyepiece Reticle and ergonomics . I don't know what the newer Models have , but I preferred the older Leica for those features . I finally bought a Swaro and it goes far beyond 1000 Yards which is also beyond my capabilities . I would hesitate to recommend a used one since it took me three units to get a good one . Apparently the electronics are quite variable on many LRF's ...... that's why you hear of great variability in Maximum Range . If you could find a used Swaro from someone you trust or that you could try out ......that would be a good option . It would be very interesting if Hogpatrol would post results with his new Leica 2400 .

Tested about dozen LRFs , bought and sold 5 or 6 in past two years till finaly gave up an bought a high end LRF Vectronix Terrapin x
In general on practical sized targets ,not barns, hillsides and other large or reflective targets you typicaly get 1/3 or less of nominal range .

500$ range LRFs tap out on practical sized targets at about 1000y

Up to 500$ range Nikon 4K is courrent king of the hill

Looks like $500 just ain't gonna do what I want. Terrapin X =$1800. But I've spent way more than that on a single rifle. So Ill have to rethink my budget. I wonder how they do that deficit thing? Mike

Sig makes one couple people have them and they seem to do well. Terrapin hard to beat. Have one love it. 2k though.

We had 2 sig kilo 2200MR before ditching them , simply to much hit and miss affair , one could never hit anything past 900y the other one strugled with 1000y , like said in same price range i would take Nikon 4K over Sig any time .

You can hit a house or vehicle and most will give you a reading. But once you go to an practicaly sized target, the field narrows rather quickly. Nikon Black 4K will hit rocks and the side of a hill at 2000 yards, depending on the light, but for practical target it typicaly taps out around 1200 yards . Like said Nikon 4K is currently the best one in 400-500$ range .

The Sig Kilo2400AB will get targets to 1 mile but they have to be reflective. Non reflective targets max out at around 1500.

The Terrapin will get targets to about 2400y, after that it will hit houses and whatnot farther.

Just hitting a house really far away does not tell the story, we shoot at much smaller targets, not houses and cars, and billboards.

One other part of the story is large reticles , you have to find the spot where laser is actualy hitting as the aiming dot or circle is far larger than laser beam

Got the 2400r today. Just for fun I stood on the side of the road. Ranged a guy on a motorcycle that passed by. Around 1pm, super hot 110, clear, and way heavy mirage on the asphalt. He faded into an ocean of mirage as I got the last range on him of 1068 yards. My Leupold 1200 would of quit at 400 in those conditions. I'm going to test it this weekend on this plastic guy. Mike

Update on my new Leica Rangemaster 2400-R. See the pictures for context. Note I didn't write down the numbers so I'll call 1182 as 1200 and 867 as 850, get it? Just before sunrise I got 2250 on the white hay stacks way in the background. Pre sunrise on the target I got 1200 and on the coyote I got 950. Did some shooting then repeated test with the sun up at 9am. 1000 on the target and 750 on the coyote. So my hopes were to be able to range a coyote to 800. I'm satisfied. I also checked my Leupold 1200i. Best on coyote was 450. Mike
