1-8.5 twist with 140H Bergers

This what I should have posted before. Has anyone experienced this combination and have positive or negative results to share. Thanks in advance.

My first and favorite 6.5 Creedmoor is a Bartlein 8.5 twist 5R and it has always shot the 140-142 grain bullets well.
I've shot it several times out to 1,250 Yards (longest available distance) with great results.

I've got a 1-8.5 on two different .260 Rem. chambered barrels and they do shoot the 139 Lapua and 140gr. bullets.

I will say though 8.5 twist is getting on the ragged edged. I would not go any slower on the twist rate.

That being said I have a 1-8.2 on another .260 Rem. chambered barrel and a 1-6.75 twist 6.5CM barrel.

My experience with a 8.5tw and the berger 140 hyb was not so good. I’m shooting a 6.5 x 47L at 2800 fps. I was experiencing random flyers that I couldn’t explain. It shot the 140’s really well except for the random flyer. I moved to a 8tw barrel and the flyers went away. My x count also went up dramatically. So I do have experience to compare the two. Now, I also have a 8.5 tw that I shoot the 130 berger vld’s and it’s an absolute hammer. To sum it up, like Frank said, you’re on the ragged edge with the 8.5 and a 140 bullet. All my shooting is at 600 yds.

Thank all of you for you feedback. I have 6.5's in both 8 and 8.5 twists and just bought a bunch of 140H's. I am shooting at 6K elevation so the 8.5 may work. Will let you know soon how they are working after I get my SM target repaired.

At 6,000 ft elevation your 8.5” twist should be more than adequate. Plug that in to the Berger Twist rate Stability program. Your SG should be well above 1.5.
