30 Cal A-tips

Anyone have any real life info on the 230 grain A-tips? Jump/jam, how they hold up at distance? I'm playing with a new 30 cal for ELR and its hard to ignore the BC of the 230s and 250s. Plus, they're real pretty! I'm not real concerned with the cost as this is not a high volume rig.
Thanks

We have a thousand coming. Should be here any day now. As soon as Dave and I do some shooting with them will let you know.

Dave has a .300wm and mine will be shot thru my PRC.

I’ve shot both the 135 and 153’s in 6.5mm and I’m running them .010” to .015” off and just shoot nice small groups.

Thanks Frank
In my 300PRC, to fit mag length in a SAMMI
chamber I have to jump them .200. I'll do some more testing single feeding with .010 jump. Almost don't want them to shoot if ya know what I mean. So far at close distance,
850 yards, in order of performance group wise. 225 Hornady, 200 grain Sierra, 215 Berger, and 230 Atips. I'm gunna run the 225s at 1300 and 1600 next week and see if they hold up. Also, more testing with the Atips.
If they shoot, I'll have Dave Tooley set it back or get another barrel. Like I said, kinda hope they don't work.

I think they will work just fine for ya! :)

I’ve shot the 225 ELD-M’s and 230SMK only out to a 1k and all have shot outstanding.

I’m running them at 2900fps.

Also making another barrel in a 1-8.5 twist so I can try the 250gr bullet.

My barrel right now is a 1-9 twist and will not shoot the 250 ATIPs.

I have on of your 8.5 twist barrels on my 300. Shoots everything 208s, 215s, 225s and 230 Atips very well. Atips @ 2811 fps.

What velocity do you think one might get with the 250 in a 300 PRC? They designed that bullet for saami spec 300 PRC with 8.5 twist. I'd guess only 2700 and that might take a long barrel. Maybe 3000 fps in a 300 lapua AI

I shot them to 2300 yards yesterday. They look like the real deal.

The gun is a 32" 1:8 Bartlein 5R chambered in 300 Norma. Conditions were very still, muzzle velocity was 3090 fps, SD was 6 fps, and they were probably down to 1150ish fps at the target. They beat the AB CDM by about half a mil and held vertical better than anything else I've tried.

That's just one trip, ymmv.

Do you think the 230 Atips are worth the extra money over the 225 ELDMs?? Twice the money for not a lot better BC that 98% of shooter will never notice.... maybe 200 yds more at supersonic? Maybe...
I like the Atips-truly a great bullet but not worth the extra money for MOST people. IMO

I ran the 230s out to 1600. Less elevation than the 215 Berger Or 225 ELD. Groups were nothing to convert me. That was with 3 different powders. I bought 200 to try and may revisit if I can ever get some Reloader 26 to play with. Otherwise, I'll make someone a hell of a deal on the remaining 150 I have.

After reading different things over on another forum, I'm wondering if one of the things that may separate the A-Tip from other bullets, including the ELD-M's, is how consistent these things are in their dimensions which leads to consistent BC #'s from bullet to bullet. Reading some of the stuff from Applied Ballistics, their is a certain amount of variance in BC from bullet to bullet and with the A-Tip having so vary little dimensional variance I'd imagine this would give them some what of an edge over other bullets that don't. Naturally this will likely be something only LR or ELR shooters will notice though.

They seem to REALLY cut the wind WELL I have noticed. They are truly the best designed 30 cal projectile IMO. However for the cash I would prolly use the 225 gr. ELDMs. The BC is comparable and the price is about half....and like I usually say, VERY FEW shooters would even know/see much difference. JMO

IF you have a barrel that likes them they will be worth the money spent.

- I plan to try both the 230 & 250 in a 30-378 Weatherby that is throated for 230 Berger Hybrids & a 1-9 twist 35" barrel. - The 230's I'll try in a 300 RUM, 300 Norma Mag. Imp. & 30 Nosler (all throated at .285 for the 230 gr. Berger Hybrids) - I haven't had time yet to get them loaded & a test plan put together, but I'm hoping that I can get them to work in at least 1 caliber.

Just had the first advert for them in NZ - $NZ199 a box... ($US131) for 135g 6.5mm. I'll stick to Lapua, thanks.

There is huge disparity in price, abroad. Our stateside price is more like $80. I don’t think this gap is Hornady’s doing, at all. $131 versus about $80 means that others along the chain are actually making more from each bullet than Hornady is, having designed and manufactured the product.
