California gun laws and Accurate Shooting

carlsbad

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
Contrary to popular belief, the actual California gun laws have little impact on precision shooting. There are a few laws that are ridiculous and make it hard on plinkers with ARs but for precision shooters, it isn't that bad.

1. Californians have to spend a few more $ and wait 10 days when they buy an action. Once you have your actions, this isn't a problem. Rebarreling, shipping to gunsmiths, parts, modificaions, etc are no different here than anywhere else. The only component of a precision rifle that is controlled is the action. Everything else you can order all day and all night. Smart sellers love our money.

2. New loaded ammo law creates some hoops to jump through to buy loaded ammo. I never buy loaded ammo, as most precision shooters don't, so no problem. No restrictions on components, bullets, primers, powder, etc. Same laws as everywhere else.

That is it.

The biggest problem Californian shooters face is ignorance. People in other states have this media-driven ridiculous view of California as a bunch of fairies prancing around calling each other by gender-less pronouns. They put in their ads "no shipping to CA" or one large corporate seller started putting a "CA surcharge" on their shipping rates even though there was no factual basis for it.

In reality, California had more Trump votes than any state other than Texas of Florida. Except for the urban areas, we tend to be conservative republicans, just like the rest of the country.

Now I know people who have never shot here will post in this thread that I'm wrong. I'll try to ignore them or at least respond professionally. It will be difficult.

Thanks for clearing that up Jerry . Living in New York I know of what you speak . More hoops to jump through is a pain I have to live with to stay legal.

"There are a few laws that are ridiculous and make it hard on plinkers with ARs but for precision shooters..."

I guess it's OK that someone else gets screwed as long as you aren't bothered.

You might want to read the poem "First they came..." by Martin Niemöller. Take note that it's about the cowardice of people that felt that they were special and immune to the tyranny of the system.

How do shooters become "Accurate competitive shooters?" Most start by having a mentor take them hunting or to a range and find the challenge and joy of shooting. They don't start by buying a $3000 dollar rifle, $2000 worth of reloading equipment, and many dollars of reloading and shooting supplies. By making it harder to get plinking ammo many young shooters will never find that joy or challenge that "Accurate Shooters" have known. By increasing the hurdles to buy rimfire and other manufactured ammunition few young people will be encouraged to become "Accurate Shooters."

Yes, bolt-action rifle shooters who hand-load have not been drastically affected. But that does NOT mean the situation is good... not in the least.

1. Rimfire precision shooters buy ONLY loaded ammo.

Yes the new law IS a problem. I have a close friend who is an FFL and a rimfire competitor, and even he has issues getting the ammo he competes with. For the average Joe, compliance with the law is confusing.

2. Shotgun competitors have problems with the laws.
I got this direct, in person, from CA Resident and Olympic Gold Medalist Kim Rhode. She is not able to get the type of shotshells she uses in competition in CA. She used to mail-order the comp shotgun ammo, and now she can no longer do so and no retailer carries it. She cannot buy it out of state and bring it in. There may be ways to special order it through an FFL, but as of the time I spoke to Kim at SHOT Show, she had not been able to do so.

3. Cops Are Still Busting People for 10+ Round Magazines
There is significant confusion over possession of magazines with more than 10 round capacity. A Federal judge, some months ago, issued a ruling stating that the CA magazine ban was unconstitutional. This lead to sale/importation of new 10+ magazines for a very brief period of time, but then the same judge put a halt to that during the pendency of the litigation.

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2019/04/federal-court-rules-ca-magazine-ban-is-unconstitutional/

Many law enforcement organizations have NOT got the message. Just last month, in my county, Sheriffs arrested an Ojai, CA man for a variety of weapons charges, notably including possession of 10+ capacity magazines which were purchased BEFORE the California mag ban.

MORE: 4/4/2019: The decision holding California’s ban on full-capacity magazines to be unconstitutional still stands. However Federal Judge Benitez has issued a stay on sales of full-capacity magazines in California, pending appeal. This STAY ORDER goes into effect April 5, 2019 at 5:00 pm. This will temporarily halt sales of magazines with 10+ round capacity, while his decision is under appeal. The doors are shut again for the time being.

Regarding Ammunition -- The laws ARE having an effect. In my home town of Ventura, two sporting goods stores have stopped selling ammunition altogether.

Most of the hoops we now must go through on loaded ammunition, lead free bullets and all really does not bother me too much, as I can get what I want and use, but with a few more rules to abide by.
What does erk's me about all these new regulations is that they do nothing to stop the criminal, they don't follow them anyway, black market and theft still is there way. It only effects the lawful and legal gun owner, but California's politicians only try to control legal people and do nothing against the criminal.

Well said. This is exactly what our stupid gun laws here in Canada accomplish. Do nothing to stop the criminal, just make it hard on the law abiding person, and make the liberals feel good. Make no mistake, California is on it's way to the same gun restrictions as us. Just give it time.

incrementalism is how the antigunners fight and win, they dont care about the criminals, their goal is to discourage gun ownership by making it too much hassle, sooner or later reloading components will be on the block, and there will be those who dont care because it doesn't affect them, yet

When I was a kid it was common to see signs in the windows or doors of businesses that read "No shirt, No shoes, No service". Somewhere along the line this changed. It's probably against the law now in most places to have such a sign displayed.

To me, that is pure bullshit. Any business should have the right to sell to or serve anyone they want to or don't as the case may be. If you don't like it then go someplace else. There is always someone out there that will be glad to take your money no matter where you live or who you are.

So you think you are safe from these laws? Wait until they come after your 'sniper' rifles. They will NOT stop.
you beat me too it, today's scoped assisted hunting or target rifles are tomorrow's sniper rifles. The argument will be why do you need to shoot over 100+yds. Component bans and limitations are surely on the drawing board or waiting in a folder on some rank politicians desk.

You have every right to refuse service to whomever you want...
But it may come with a lawsuit!
