How to modify AICS Magpul for a Dasher

a few of you were interested, so here it is..

how to modify a Magpul using factory internal parts. costing around $40 for the whole setup.
*im using it with a PTG bottom metal & Bighorn Origin action
*your miles may vary, the mod may need tweaked to your setup

empty mag. here you can see the follower chopped off. (i chopped off a little too much) still functions great

bottom of follower:
inside we need to make room for the spacer. with the spacer inside, the spring needs to move. ive circled where i removed material to allow the spring to move forward and out of the way.

here is the base plate. you can see where i removed material to allow the spring to move forward.

and the spacer... i used a Score-High savage 223 follower that fit like it was made for it. part# BRF-423. midways part# 325484 it costs $10
two key things with it. obviously you want the cupped/dished part facing the rear of the mag. second, you will notice one end is beveled. this side needs to be the end pointing up into the mag. scroll up to the second picture, you can see the bevels in the top of the empty mag. all this does is allows the spacer to slide a few thousandths more into the mag(makes just enough difference)
*spacer will need glued in.

spacer dimensions: .700" wide, .380" thick, 2.25" tall

ive ran this setup for over a year now. ive yet to have any problems with it. the rounds feed slick out of these mags. when i first starting using it i couldnt tell they were feeding into the chamber.

and while your inside the magpul. you can remove this tang and make the magpul a 6round mag.... ive yet to chop this one off...

That would be great if you could the MDT mags. Thanks for the detailed photos it's a nice alternative to have available.

I run a slightly modified Magpul AICS magazine without any kit and it works terrific for straight 6BR and Dasher. I sanded down and opened up the feedlips, as well as around the outside and the mag latch. It feeds 100% and drops free now.

interesting, mine wanted to nose dive inside the mag when i tried using it with no spacer in the back. the spacer was my fix.

ive modded one of these mapuls to run my 7saum out of. talk about some feed lip modification! little by little with the right angle, it can be done.

Thank YOU for the detailed instructions,,,lots of shooter can benefit from this article,,,Roger

Or, you could just buy the MDT BR mags.

I was going to go this route.

$90 for a magazine though....that’s pretty steep. And they’ve been on backorder for at least 2 months.

I’ve ran the Magpul mags with a Dasher with zero issues and just modified one similar to this way for a 22BR and it works fine.

I've done what the OP did for a 10 round Magpul mag and use it for a 6 Dasher. I made a spacer for the back out of Delrin, and cut down the other parts. While I've also done conversions on AI AICS metal mags, I find the Magpul mag conversions feed the smoothest.

Has anyone modeled or 3d printed a follower, spacer, and baseplate setup for the magpul mags? These mods seem great but surely you could make these out of about $1 in durable plastic and still have the original parts to return to factory if you want. I have searched but haven’t been able to find anything.

I am scratching my head over this topic. Maybe I just got lucky and have the right combination of action, chassis and DBM but the Magpul AICS five-round mags I have all work with my 6 Dasher without any modification.

The main issue that ive seen is the loaded ammo sliding back and forth with the bolt if you work it fast. Its like a pistol mag jamming if you dont load them to the back sometimes

I was using AW mags with HRD spacer kits but, at $65 each, they were pricey. And honestly, the first one of the spacer kits I bought was to help feed heavy bullet 22-250 in my AIAW. When the Dasher repeater came along they were doing double duty and I felt I needed a couple more kits. That's when I tried the Magpul AICS mags. The only reason I haven't tried them with the 22-250 is the AW will not work with AICS mags.
