NRA Saga Continues

The Washington Times is a very conservative paper. You guys are thinking of the Washington Post.

As for the NRA, I hope they clean up their act. The organization is still useful, but we can’t tolerate this sort of bickering, corruption, and rot. It would be a shame to see all the structure and work that’s been done over decades fall apart. We’d rebuild it, but at what cost?

What’s that quote? “We must hang together or surely we will hang separately.”

I decided to put my money where my mouth is, so I just upgraded my membership to the Benefactor level. They had a deal on for $400 to upgrade so I took it.

The NRA needs our help, and we need the NRA.

I have been a Patron member for a few years and as with yourself I got the papers to upgrade for $400 but this has bothered me for a while now. What does the president of the NRA do for his 1.4 million salary? That's all donated money. What the combined salary of donated money for those 60 some board members. I have supported the NRA full heartedly since I got out of high School in 1988. Even when they didn't help me at all when I needed them. But now I'm having a hard time giving them more money to pay, not unearned but unreasonable salaries. Not to mention all the other bs going on.

Makes one wonder how much a board member is paid. Further what is the cost of a board meeting? With 76 board members flying in from all over the country, that alone is a costly proposition. These are the fat cats of society, and they don't travel on the cheap. Hotel costs, food and beverages mount up. Why would these guys not donate their time and efforts to a cause the supposedly are devoted to.

I have been a member of the NRA since I was 14 years old. Over those years I have donated a lot of money, but have recently stopped responding to their overwhelming correspondence, begging for more and more money while they continue spend and spend on shady contracts, within the board membership. I have also stopped allowing Midway to keep the odd change on my purchases there. You have to opt out on each order which angers me at times

LaPierre"s treatment of North and Cox, shows he is afraid of being held accountable for the wanton and needless over spending. This board has dragged the finances deep into the red. They have mortgaged OUR headquarters to the hilt.

Like many others the several shooting clubs I belong to require membership in the NRA.

Yes they are far from perfect but...
Maybe you ( applies to anyone that feels the same way as what you stated above ) should sell all your guns as well then.

Every person that feels and does as you do only adds more burden to us Gun Owners that pony up to support the only voice in Washington we have.

As imperfect as they are...

Anyone that values gun ownership should belong even if they only pay the minimum annual dues.

I have a hard time donating my hard earned money so they have more to waste. I understand that they may be the best thing going for us but there comes a time when you have to say enough is enough. There also comes a time when we will have to either stand and fight with our firearms or lay them down and become sheep. I, in no way am I for a civil war but the nut jobs keep pushing and pushing and pushing and eventually you have to push back. That time I feel is getting close. I know where I stand but I pray for my grandchildren. They will never know this country as I did.

Last NRA thread was removed just FYI.

I’m a lifetime member. If they aren’t performing, like any entity that provides a service, then they need to be fixed. What good is throwing money at a problem if it isn’t getting the results you want....

Here are some of the NRAs “notable achievements” from some quick google searches:

“In 1934, the National Rifle Association created a Legislative Affairs Division and testified in front of Congress in support of the first substantial federal gun control legislation in the US, the National Firearms Act.[61]

“The NRA also supported California’s Mulford Act of 1967, which had banned carrying loaded weapons in public in response to the Black Panther Party’s impromptu march on the State Capitol to protest gun control legislation on May 2, 1967.”

“ the NICS—the National Instant Criminal Background System—was the legislation that the NRA supported at its very inception and has consistently supported since.”

“But in order to win votes among Democratic congressional votes, however, the NRA was forced to abandon an entire category of firearm: machine guns. According to the amendment, introduced at the last minute by New Jersey House Democrat William Hughes, any civilian possession of machine guns manufactured after May 19, 1986 — of which there are still 193,000 in circulation today — could be prosecuted. Already existing machine guns would be closely tracked by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The NRA played the sacrifice as virtually meaningless. “I remember very well having dinner…with Wayne LaPierre on the big victory after it passed the House,” said former NRA lobbyist “And we weren’t too concerned about the machine gun issue.” But the decision set a precedent, especially for a powerful lobby that increasingly prided itself on zero Second Amendment compromises.”

“Despite the fact that the Obama administration approved the sale of bump fire stocks on at least two occasions, the National Rifle Association is calling on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law. The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations.”

“In 2016 the NRA raised a record $366 million and spent $412 million for political activities.”

AND something as simple as suppressors we still don’t have. The NRA can’t help us stick tubes on the end of our guns, but they still call me once a week asking for more money. The NRA is just a speed bump to the inevitable.

I’m joining the GOA. If everyone jumps ship hopefully the GOA can do what the NRA was supposed to do, and the NRA gets a wake up call to fix their act. Also, during those phone surveys I tell them how I feel.

I do my part supporting 2A by voting for pro 2A politicians, introducing friends, family, and coworkers to hunting and shooting, and buying stuff from the shooting industry ($400 billion a year industry in the US). So don’t lump me into an anti 2A group bc I’m upset with the NRAs history and current performance. The only other thing I could do is quit my job and work for them to change them culturally or become a lawyer.

There is no chance I will re-join the NRA until the following things happen:

  1. LaPierre is no longer in office.
  2. Nugent is no longer in office.
  3. Instructors have a clear path to influence curriculums.

The NRA needs to demonstrate integrity, accountability and results. At the moment, they have none of those.

They beg you guys for money, then they spend it to re-new my instructor creds if I'm involved in an NRA class, when I'm no longer in the NRA. Thank you, I guess, but I no longer really need them. Your money is being wasted.

If you're a life member, I feel sorry for you. You can't even resign in protest. The NRA has absolutely no reason to listen to you.

Actually, I’d argue that this attitude is exactly what allowed the NRA to reach the despicable state that we now find them in. Since they’ve been able to count on millions of gun owners to unconditionally support them all of these years regardless of their performance, they are no longer accountable to their membership. They do what they want, they waste money like drunken sailors, and they make concessions on “common sense” gun laws.

I’m a life member, so they got my money a long time ago. I certainly won’t be sending them any more unless/until the current mess is straightened out. There are other pro-2A organizations that actually spend their money fighting for the second amendment.

Amen...nothing wrong with accountability. Following them because they are “pro gun” has gotten us nowhere.

I never felt my return on investment with the NRA was worth it recently and dropped my membership. I give my money to political causes that result in getting more conservative judges on the Supreme Court. That is where we will win the battle.
