Tips & Tricks for better score 600 & 1000 Benchrest

Bart, I'm in the same boat. I did a lot of thinking about this on the long drive home Sunday. Looking forward to the responses.

Make an offering to the wind fairy before every match!

Dang Bart you need a shave, one of the best score shooters in 1000 yds was Philip yott he told me never take all of it on windage an pay close attention to push and let ups an if you have a birm behind the target frames let the guy next to you start an see his dust print when it hits the middle let yours go LOL but no joke.

This weekend I probably had the best shooting gun on the line at Memphis ...16 Targets agging 2.018 yet my scores pretty much sucked.

One target my 5 second sighter went high about 6 inches. I said “nope I’m not falling for the banana up the tail pipe!” Well that’s exactly where they hit! High on the target with a nice score of 26! You could see every shot up there in the white. It makes you feel icky!

On the other hand Guys like John Ross continue to score well!

So help a brother out!

Excellent advise!

Shoot some F Open:)
That has been suggested and probably a very good idea!

I think what I’m going to do is set up on my 500 yard bench with a bullseye Camera set on the target. Then practice reading and conditions and hitting a 3/4 inch dot shooting one shot at a time with a good pause in between. Kind of like an f Class match.

Another exercise I’m going to Try is playing the tape for a 2 minute match. Shoot the gong like I normally would, click all the way to my last shot for one target. Then repeat but only click half the value on the next. Try to figure out if there an advantage of one over the other.

There are at least a few Texan Fly Shooters wondering the same thing. One well placed shot will beat a 1/2" 5 shot group over off the scoring rings in that game.

If nothing else, this thread makes me feel better about myself. LOL.

The highlight of the F Class shooting season for me is competing in the Regional Match at Missoula in September that Jamie Williams puts on. I keep telling myself that I should go up and shoot a long range bench rest match with the guys up there - I know I would learn alot!!!

Shawn Williams aka Northridge does shoot in the F class match and does very well. Be interesting to hear if shooting F Class provided any tips for his score shooting in bench rest?

I see a lot of promise in listening to really good F-class guys the long departure of one the best in 1000yd F-class DonNagel out of Ohio I used to ask him stuff he really new how to keepum in the middle he always said waterline Stan watch the mirage he shot a few of our benchrest matches an was hard to beat for score we all miss his knowledge.

A 115gr in the 7 ring is still a 7 MOUSE!

Right, but they do resist better. Possibly not in the example you're giving here though. Vertical change is typically a slight change in head or tail wind angle and or speed. Not always though, I watched the range get darker as the sighter was winding down, and by the time it settled the shots were a foot low. I of course left it right there because I didn't care lol.
