6BRA versus 6 Dasher @ 600 yards

I have shot the 6 BRA for the last 2 years and several shooters ask me whether it is better than the Dasher..... Well, in my case the answer is NO . My evidence is strictly anecdotal, but there are several shooters trying the BRA and so far they have been unable to dislodge the Dasher from the top spots. Over the past two years, the following shooters have been winning most of the matches: Doug Wasson-6 Dasher, Jeff Turner- 6 Dasher, Johnny Costello-6 Dasher, and Mark Kurtz-6 Dasher. I can't remember a single first place being won with a 6 BRA. There has been some 300 yard wins with it but for 600 yards, I don't know if the Dasher will be replaced any time soon. (at least at our range). I once won a few matches, but all were with the Dasher. I still have a Dasher barrel but it has high mileage and I have two BRA's. Been thinking of setting back the newest BRA barrel and rechambered it for Dasher. However, I may just take two aspirins and go to bed. Good shooting...James CORRECTION- Rickey Reeves won a 600 yard match with the 6BRA.

Yes. Bart has had an exact opposite experience as have I. He tried and tried to get the Dasher to shoot and then changed to the Bra and....EUREKA! He has little use for the Dasher.

Yes, it was. As were several other recent world records. Good line of questioning though.... I have no idea where you'd find this data, but what I'd want to know is...

In the last few years, how many new world record groups shot with a Dasher? (avg/yr)
In the last few years, how many new world record groups shot with a 6BRA? (avg/yr)
If you look back a few more years before the 6BRA became popular, how many new world records were being shot by the Dasher? (avg/yr)

Essentially the question is, when the 6BRA started becoming popular did a bunch of new world records start to happen at a more rapid pace than before? Just reading the forum discussions over the past few years it would seem like that's the case.
 
Switching to a new cartridge is not automatically going to make you or anyone else start winning! It is a combination of several variables that all have to come together. The cartridge is just one of those many variables. You have to be a good shooter that works hard at reloading the right components and a lot of shooting and practice. Some of those varibles that have to come together are a great barrel (hummer), great bullets and a good lot of those great bullets, good lot of the right powder, good lot of the correct primer that works with the powder you are using. Good brass that has been meticulously prepped and fire formed correctly. I dont think the 6BR-AI is any more accurate than the Dasher, but is darn more easy to fireform and fireform correctly. It seems to me to tune easier, and have a wider tune. They both are very, very accurate and accomplish the same thing. I am sure there are some that have had great success with the 6BR, BRX, BRDX, BRBS etc. I dont discount any of those rounds. They are all very accurate because they are made from the great BR case. I have tried all of them with success. The BR-AI just does what I want easier. Samuel Hall

Samuel, you, Bart, Tom Mousel, and others who have mastered the 600 yard game are probably right. My problems are probably the shooter (the nut at the end of the buttstock needs tightening). With that being said, my scores have suffered greatly since switching to the BRA. I won SOTY with an average of 191.X (we shoot score only) with the Dasher and I have NOT broken 190 since switching to the BRA. As I said, my data falls in the anecdotal category, but I am beginning to desire a good shooting Dasher. Of course, I am 75 years old and have some medical problems. I fell and broke my hip 4 months ago and am just now feeling like shooting again. I just remember the good old days when I could win occasionally. JamesLong range trophies 001.JPG
 
Maybe you don't shoot as good as you used too... It happens. Not sure it is caliber specific.

I have a feeling they both shoot the same nose very similarly. But the 6BRA is easier.

I HAVE A HAUNTING FEELING THAT YOU ARE CORRECT. Although it hurts my pride to admit it, I don't shoot as well as I did a few years ago. One reason that I haven't completely given up on the BRA is that I have shot some small groups at 600yds, 300 yds, and 200yds. It seems that I can't handle the wind and mirage as well with the BRA as I did with the Dasher, but again that could be a result of my diminished skill. I think I will dig out my old Oehler and try to duplicate the velocity with which I got good results in the Dasher.

It's hard for me to believe that any BR variant can't compete at 600y.. I don't think the Dasher is going anywhere either but the BRA starts to reach Dasher numbers without the drama so to speak..

10 years ago, shot in the 160's w/ 7mag. 8 years ago switched to 6 x 47 and shot in the 170's. 5 years ago switched to 6 brx and shot in the 180's. 2 years ago switched to 6bra and now shoot in the 190's. I haven't shot a lot of matches, but I have confidence that most of the improvement has come from the cartridge. Just my experience, fwiw.

Dusty, an even better idea is to quit. We have seen ball players, race car drivers, and others who don't quit when they should. They know that they are past their prime, but hang on too long. However, I plan to shoot the rest of this year and make a decision about next year. By the way, I appreciate the advice (and other help) that I have gotten from you and Bart. Good shooting....James
 
James, Anytime you switch cartridges there is a new learning curve. At least several months has been my experience. If you are well versed with the Dasher as it looks by your success. I would stick with the Dasher. I shot some Dasher barrels even after I had learned the BR-AI. But when the Dasher brass gave up the ghost, I told myself I was NOT going through the hastle of making more Dasher brass. So I had my good barrels set back just enough to make into an AI. I have actually won some relays at 1000 yards against some stiff competition fire forming brass for the 1st time with a 6BR-AI. But what ever you do James, don’t stop shooting and trying, I mean that. Have fun with it! I was just not enjoying FF that darn Dasher brass anymore. It seemed like a big waste of time to me. I would rather be out shooting targets and working on loads.

Another way would be to just shoot both cartridges in the same barrel and rechamber so you take the barrel out of equation...or is it the wind?

Confidence in your equipment is needed for success and it reads as if you don't have it with the BRA. Get another barrel and chamber it up for a Dasher. Dig out some of your old Dasher brass and get shooting with it. The Dasher has worked for you. Go back to it and see what happens.

And don't even think about stopping the shooting. Keep after it.
