Starting a new build with a Savage Target action RP/LE, Krieger 6.5 twist at 28" and a H&S precision Stock. I want to shoot the 22 Nosler throated for 90 to 95 gr Sierra's, As I have been reading on here the 22BR and its derivitives seem a better choice. Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
PS I have been reading this forum for a number of years and have learned a lot from all of you. Great forum.

Interesting question. Maybe weigh the availability of quality brass to help decide balanced against fps desired, bbl life, amount of shooting, resale potential.
Lotsa variables to "fill in the blanks" and make your choice.

What bolt head are you starting with? Switching bolt heads is not a big deal, just remember the extractor needs to line up close to the Savage logo. On your action, the bolt handle will be on the other side.

The 22 Nosler takes the same bolt head as the 223. But there aren't any great choices for brass.

The 22 BR and 22 Creed take a 308 bolt head, as does the 22-250 and 22-243. And there are much better brass choices for all of these.

My thought is go with the .22 Nosler, though maybe go with a bit lighter bullet. Case life will suffer with the heavier bullets in that caliber if they are pushed at all - as compared to the .22 BR, though the Nosler brass really isn't as bad as a lot of people say, especially in your bolt gun that is not loaded excessively warm. My first thought was to recommend the Valkyrie as it is throated longer than the standard 22 Nosler and is therefor better suited to the heavier (longer) bullets. From my experience - while you will get a bit better performance from the .22 BR, the slightly lower recoil, cheaper brass and longer barrel life of the .22 Nosler would outweigh the performance difference. Inside 500 yards, you certainly don't need to go any further than the .22 Nosler. You didn't say what you were going to use it for. This is assuming it will be for varmints and such. For targets - go with the BR and give no thought to the Nosler.

Thanks to all that have replied to my question. I have decided to go with the 22 Nosler. I have the 6-1/2 twist barrel so I really want to see what it will do with heavy long bullets throated for them. I will be just punching holes in paper with it. Waiting to get some money together for the reamer maybe this week. I will post the results when I get her together and shooting. Thanks again guys
