solid pilot vs removable pilot?

Looking at getting my own reamer from Manson and was wondering if i should go solid or removable pilot? Whats the pros and cons of each?

Thanks

Q: Are you buying the reamer for a smith- or are you chambering yourself?
DIY- you need to get a set of bushings to assure correct fit, or at least one over/under "std" size (which is .0005 under nominal bore diameter) which should provide correct fit.

If it's for a smith, he'll already have them.

(ETA that extra zero I left out by mistake...)

Why would you ask on here and not your gunsmith?

Good question. 30 caliber barres are especially widespread on bore and groove diameter. They vary from .298/,3075 to .300/,308 as a norm, so you will need a removable bushing to handle these different dimensions.

Depends a lot on how the barrel is set up.. if set up in the steady rest you would need a removable pilot reamer because the reamer acts as the center. If set up thru the head stock and dialed in to the tenth then pre bored the reamer will follow the bored hole and center itself in the barrel bore. Thus no need for the removable pilot reamer.

It has to be. A pilot bushing has to be too.
Sorry, I corrected my post. I meant to say the bore was smaller and the solid pilot would not fit. Not wanting to remove the barrel form my setup, I took the reamer to a friends lathe and set it up between centers and stoned down the solid pilot so it would fit.

Bushings spin on the reamer when cutting and are less apt to scratch the lands in the bore. That’s about it. Plus is you can get picky on diameter to get the perfect fit.
