What hat do you wear while on the prairie?

I guess it's technically a boonie hat, but I use a Tilley. It's washable and lifetime guaranteed.

Yup. I’m in Wyoming. Whenever I see someone suggest attaching an umbrella to a shooting table I always wonder where they are shooting!

Take your baseball type cap and a large man's handkerchief and make a foreign leigon hat...put the handherchief on your head covering the back of your neck and ears then put the hat on. Comfortable and works great.

Well , I've spent over 30 years going to Wyoming , SD , and Montana for Pdogs . Never had a problem with my small Umbrellas either attached to my Bench or to my Chair . My "Dogbuster Bench " is pretty heavy duty . The Chair I can lift with one finger .

I don't like greasy sunscreen either. When riding motorcycles on long trips I found a product called bullfrog that is not oily. Works good. I believe it is alcohol based.

I like Tilley Hats. They come in different styles and shapes. I one that I use working around the house and another one stays in the Jeep. They will not blow off your head if you use the chin strap properly. Keeps my glasses and face dry when it rains as well.

That's a Galco SOB (Small of Back) rig for any 1911. Works great to keep the pistol out of the way, but not so great for driving. I only wear it while in the field, any other time my EDC is in a Milt Sparks VM2, worn at the 4:00 position IWB. The pistol shown is one of my Kimber .45's with their 22LR conversion mounted for those sneaky squirrels that penetrate the perimeter.

Back during when I was in the p. dog wars, we noticed that p. dogs could pick up on movement with light colors very well and it spooked them under 300 yards.

Chucks especially had great eyesight.

So, we wore earth tone colors.

We noticed that some years ago with both PD's and squirrels. Dark or earth tones for rats, and camo for chuck sneaking, as you're spot-on about their eyesight; it's amazing!

I spend a lot of time in the field hunting groundhogs in eastern PA. We have two issues here regarding hunting apparel besides the usual:

1. My area is a tick haven and we have one of the highest rates of Lyme's disease in the US.

2. Game Laws require that a orange hat be worn while hunting ground hogs.

I wear long sleeve light weight shirt, long pants tucked into my boots secured with masking tape, a wide rim hat (orange)*, a handkerchief around my neck, and lightweight gloves. Also spray the tops of my boots with tick repellent and use sun screen on my face.

Tommie--I can't remember where I purchased this hat, online somewhere, but it seems to give me pretty good sun protection while out in the prairie dog towns. I still use sunscreen, especially on my ears, nose and neck. This hat also has a chin strap, but I only use that on very windy days. Otherwise I wear it up inside the hat.

Sun protection is important (to me) during several days of prairie dog shooting. I’ve tried a few hats but haven’t found the perfect solution. Looking for face, ear and neck coverage.

Sun hats generally have either floppy or stiff brims. Stiff brimmed hats give great sun protection but tend to catch the wind and fly away. Floppy hats stay on my head in the wind but sun coverage aint happening on the upwind side. Is it an either/or situation or is there a hat that does it all?

Oh. And I refuse to wear sunscreen. It’s not an option.

Not exactly on the prairie, but the sun and wind are no less there. I'm the guy in the middle, note the difference in my shade and that of my compatriots.

I do have a canvas hat that I switch to when the wind gets up over about 10 MPH.

RIO--I hope to get out and blast some prairie dogs, but right now the old back is hurting pretty bad. It has been over 12 weeks since the surgery so I am pretty disappointed that I'm still in lots of pain. I will get out and shoot some of those vicious ND prairie dogs--watch for the reports.
