22 br on groundhogs

Hey guys just put together a trued up Remington 700 Leupold Comp 45x45 scope with a 21 inch shilen 1-10 t bull barrel in 22 br ,thinking of trying it out on groundhogs, how far can I shoot it using 50 to 52 gr bullets any thoughts on this .would love to hear some thanks

I hunt ghogs with two 22 BRs. A 14 twist and a 12 twist. 400 yds easily if your winds are nice. My 12 twIst 22 BR loves 63 and 64 gr bullets and does better in wind than when it shoots 50/52/55 great bullets. My 14 twist loves 55 gr bergers and I push them hard at 3500+ fps. You barrel will stabilize heavier bullets (?68,69 gr) and they will have higher BCs giving better wind bucking. Your scope might be a problem. I tried a leupold 45 fixed power once but had a lot of trouble finding the ghog initially and especially after first shot's recoil. Got a variable 6-24 and now 8-32 Sightron tiny dot reticle. This caliber makes a great varmint gun.

Use the 53 vmax if you can, it's heads and shoulders above 50 and 55s.

my 22 br has killed hogs out to 350 yards with no problems.using berger and serriea 52 grain bullets.

Swap out your scope. Years ago I killed a lot of groundhogs out past 250 yards with a 6 X scope. If I would have had a range finder back then that gun would have been good past 400 with the 6 X scope. A Leupold 3.5 x 10 would serve you much better for groundhog hunting, and then you should carry the scope set on 3.5 X while looking for groundhogs. If you see a close one it is much easier to find with 3 X. If you see one out there, you will have time to set your power up. To much magnification will cost you more missed groundhogs than to little mag.

Far be it from me to argue with the phenominal A. Bentley, but I've killed a slew of G-hogs and P-dogs with the 55 Gr Sierra BK and Nosler BT bullets in my 22 BR.

Although I do shoot the 53gr vmax in my 22br and will test the 55sbk for it soon

You will probably go trans sonic around 600 yards depending on your DA. So I would say to stay within that for best results.

Thanks I'll try the 52/50 gr bullets I'm also going to try my other Leupold 7to 42 power scope been using the 6br for now while my gunsmith re barrels R.E.M. 700 2506 1-10 twist for the 100 gr . Happy shooting

I finally sold the 45 power and went with a vx -6 7-42 power variable leupold my twist is1-12 ,and it groups nice with the 52 SMK the barrel is 21 inches ,my question is far can I reach out with that short barrel on woodchucks thanks

Hey I finally sold that 45 power scope I’m now using the Leupold 8.5x25 50 mm with varmint rectical thanks

But with a 21” barrel guessing the absolute best velocity (for decent groups) you’ll get is 3500+fps per the Berger Manual assuming ya push it a little bit farther than book. Usually for smacking groundhogs personally try and stay around 625-700 lbs of terminal force to make up for a non head or direct chest cavity hit. Using Litz’s AB calculator came up with about 300-350 yards.

Wow thanks 300 -350 yards is just fine for me this 22 br should work great

I smacked one a couple weeks ago at 404 yards, 22BR, 55 gr SBK. 300 to 350 should be a chip shot for this cartridge.

isn't the Br basically a 22-250? Or is my old brain gone dead? I been out to 600-650 with the 250 and 55 grain vmax....Not a lot of gas out there, but still killing them.

22 br is a shorter case and uses a small rifle primer the 22-250 is longer and uses a large rifle primer

I have not read all the prior replies...my 22 BR seems to be faster than my 22-250's. def more accurate. Sierra 55g Blitz King is a fine bullet for the 22BR. This cartridge is very accurate. 350-400 yds. You could spin 55-64 g w your twist. my bbl is a 12 twist, 26" med hvy contour.
