223 vs 6br for girlfriend

You could do that and rebate the 6BR rims to fit the 223.
The cartridge to the far right is a BR rebated to 223 rim size.

Not looking for that much brass prep right now. I told her she will be loading her own ammo (under supervision, of course) so the simpler the better.

So my wife used to only shoot my 22-250. Didn't want to shoot any of my other bigger guns. Now that I built a 20 Vartarg, that's all she will shoot. Doesn't want to deal with the 22-250 anymore because there is too much recoil and muzzle blast.

I think blast has just as much of an effect as recoil on perceived harshness which is why I don't use or recommend muzzle brakes.

6BR doesn't seem like much, but it's a noticeable step up in blast and recoil from a 223.

If you are going to introduce her to F Class, then you may as well get the 6 BR or one of the blown out 6 BR's. The gun can weigh in the 22 lb range and the recoil will be light. If F-TR (18 lb. range) is the way you want to go. .223 with 80 or 90 grain vice the .308. Out to 600 It is a pleasure to shoot and the way to go. In the wind the .223 suffers a lot at 1,000 with those light bullets.

Hands down 223 ACKLEY. And I will tell you why... Because you can PRACTICE. I have had buddies that decided to start shooting and they wanted some upgraded caliber and I told them NO!!! And they said "why"? And I said because you can bring 100 rounds to practice instead of 20... and a 223A in 1-8 twist will really, really shoot, and more consistent than the 6mms (I know heresy right?). You can shoot just as tight with a standard 223 in an an Ackley fire forming. Barrel life is really almost infinite. I still have my space gun that will shoot 1/4 MOA after 6000 rounds.

You can buy ammo at WALMART for goodness sake. 223 from a progressive will outshoot most people. I know... I have loaded 10000s of 223 rounds of progressive ammo and I am constantly stunned how good it shoots.

And recoil is ZERO. I know there are lots of guys that start their women on larger calibers and RUIN THEM. They say or a 6BR is not a lot of recoil, well it is best to start them in 22LR really... This isn't a GUY.

Don't build a 1K rifle if you are shooting less than 200 nearly all the time... that is huge mistake...

But I am sure I will be in the minority here...

When I built my first 6BR i thought I died and went to heaven, Accuracy was absolutely incredible, and it was great for all ranges, 100, 500 and 1000. The 223 might have an advantage at a 100 but will be far outgunned at 300 and further. Then I built one for my son (6BR), at the time was 10, with a muzzle break. He shot high score of the year in the JR division at the local ground hog matches and stayed very competitive with the seasoned shooters. The recoil was not a factor and the muzzle blast for the shooter is not anything to be concerned with.

If you're going to introduce a new shooter, make it as good as you can afford, when you're at the 1000 yard line and the average group is under 10" and you print much larger groups it can become very discouraging very fast.

Recoil really depends on your gun weight and stock. The dasher my girlfriend shoots weighs 22 pounds and has a rubber recoil pad. It feels like a 223 as far as felt recoil. My bra is 15 pounds and has a steel butt plate. It will leave a bruise and has surprisingly sharp recoil. Both rounds sending a 105 at 2960fps.

A .223 Rem set up to shoot 90s will run with a 6 BR or most anything else out to 600 yd unless the wind conditions are really, really nasty. 1000 yds is not out of the question with such a setup either, although I wouldn't purposely choose it unless the conditions were going to be generally mild. A rifle throated PTG's .223 Rem ISSF reamer that cuts 0.169" freebore would allow you to shoot your pick of the 80 to 90 gr bullets available (i.e Berger 80.5s, Sierra 90s, Berger 90s), any of which will work very well when paired up with Varget or H4895. The .223 Rem is just a fun caliber to shoot and it sounds like you're already set up for it. To me, that's a no-brainer.

Alex we shoot a 1K fun match every 4th Saturday, so there’s another day to shoot. Do a 6BR or better yet a Dasher or BRX. A 223 at 1K just ain’t happening compared to a 6mm..
