Rock Creek barrels ?

Haven't seen one listed in BR equipment lists for a long time. Some years back, they were and did well, both group and score.

They havent been a contender since james lederer left with all his knowledge. I still have some from the time they were on equipment lists unchambered, for my nostalgia collection

Rock Creek has two different barrels; one is button rifled and one is cut rifled. I understand they do quite a bit of OEM work now. I think not only Lederer but Mike Rock have parted ways with them. Those were the two that made Rock Creek what it was. Not many know what it is now.
With a Bartlein or Krieger one usually has a good probability that the barrel will perform well. With a Rock Creek I would say the odds are not as high.

I have two Rock Creek 5r barrels at present and am thinking about another this summer or fall. I had one on a 12 ftr, but sold it 2 years ago. The guy that bought it does well with it. Russell is good to work with. I would not hesitate to buy one. Barlow

Paul Volstad left when Lederer left. 2 good guys.
I either dealt with Mike so we could BS for an hr about 'the good ole' days' when he was still in SD or Paul who also was a great honest guy to deal with. Only dealt with James 3-4 times. All were good to me! My favorite coyote rifle is a Rock 6XC that shoots super, also one of my 308's and a 6BR have Mike Rock barrels that are excellent. Had one of their 18" chrome lined button rifled AR barrels that I wished I never sold. Have a couple of 30 cal blanks set back, one from Mike and the other from Boots, miss conversing with both of them. Two great and generous guys IMO that I wished I could have met in person. Haven't had anything from the new owner, kinda went to Bartlein or Krieger for the last 8-10 blanks I have used since Mike sold. Wonder how his new life raising them huge hogs is going?lol

James Lederer and Paul Tolvstad were working for Rock Creek Barrels when Mike Rock bought Kostyshyn Barrels inventory and machinery. James didn’t like the way the business was going and struck out on his own after I had him contact Ron Pence who makes barrels and barrel building equipment. Ron got James going and that part is history. Paul built his own riflers and deep drill. Paul left Rock and ended up at Killough Equipment. If Rock Creek is still around, I don’t think Mike is involved. I might mention that Boots Obermyer employed and taught all these guys the ropes of cut rifled barrels. Our hats should be off to Boots.

I got one of their barrels a couple years back...I don't know when anyone left or who was running it at the time, but this barrel doesn't do too well. It's a cut 5R and it looks good inside....sure wish it shot as good as it looks. Just goes to show, you cant look at a barrel and tell if it will shoot any more than you can look at a parked car and tell how fast it will go.

Dan Muller who is still on RC payroll but doesn't work there bought all of Craig Kostyshyn stuff in 2011. Rock Creek got a Government contract and got out of making certain twist barrels because of it.

Time flies so unsure exactly Mike sold out or whatever probably 4yrs or more back. He was having some health issues I know. Didn't ask him specifics, figured if he wanted to talk about them he would. He was born and raised about 80 miles southeast of me at Eagle Butte, SD on the Cheyenne Reservation. Graduated SD School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City with an engineering degree.

Had high hopes that Boots would recover good from his stroke and continue for a few more yrs but read somewhere on the net(maybe here?) that he sold some of his equipment to Krieger?. Last email from his daughter over a yr back said he was in rehab but don't know just how bad his stroke was or what functions he lost because of it. Sad that all their knowledge goes when their business or job does.

I've had a couple rock creek barrels over a few years and they both shot really well. One was a used barreled action and one was new. It's to bad to hear that they have went down hill. At one point they made good tubes.

I bought one of thier 4h rifled barrels from field and cave . Had it chambered in 6dasher . My 17 yr old daughter tied for 3rd place at our local club match with it at its first match .

I would second that opinion. I have 2. Wanted a third but the lead time was a bit longer than I wanted. I wound up with a different maker's barrel and I'm sure it'll be just fine. My first Rock is only a couple of years old and is a 1 hole barrel for me. It's also very fast.

We are stocking them in 6 & 7mm for the long range BR and F-Open crowds. 6.5s are on order, too. I have a 6mm 5R HV that shoots really well. Targets that I've seen from customers have been extremely encouraging with recent production barrels. Now, if we could get rid of this darn rain, I fully expect them to be winning their share on the TX Hillbilly BR/ Fly shoot circuit. Russ has been great to work with and has demonstrated a willingness to stand behind his product.

I emailed Russell a week or so ago and asked if they were going to build prefits. He said they were looking into it and would know more in 90 days. Barlow
