Coyote rifle build

I've added two rifles to my collection that I would consider coyote rifles. THe first is a 22-250AI that will kill anything out to 400 yards. THen I've got a Remington 6mmAI that good for 400 yards out to 800 plus. THe 6mmAi can really reach out and touch something at crazy distances.
 
Let's do an easy high school physics problem: How long does it take for a bullet to drop 1.5 inches?

From a stationary start, d = 1/2 at^2, where d = distance traveled, a (in this case) is the acceleration due to gravity on Earth (g), and t is time in seconds.

a = g = 32 ft/s^2 = 384 in/sec^2

Doing a little algebra to solve for t:

t = sqrt (2d/a) = sqrt (3in/384in/sec^2) = 0.088sec

It takes 88msec for a bullet (or anything else on Earth) to drop 1.5" from a static start (neglecting friction with the air, a safe assumption given that the vertical component of the bullet's velocity is less than 2 ft/sec).

So, how fast does a bullet have to go to cover the 200 yards (= 600 feet = 7200 inches) between the 100-yard zero and the 300-yard target? It must have an average speed of 7200 inches/0.088 sec = 81,818 in/sec = 6118 ft/sec. Uh oh. :)

In real life, the bullet already has some downward velocity when it passes through the 100-yard zero range, so it takes even less than 0.088 sec to fall another 1.5 inches, but you get the idea.

Of course, if the acceleration due to gravity and the atmospheric density are different on your home planet, then maybe the bullet really does drop just 1.5" between 100 and 300 yards. :rolleyes:
I wonder if the bullet is still on an upward trajectory at the hundred yard mark. ? If it is then that could explain it lucy !

Bullets are only dropping when they leave the bore. It's the upward angle to get the zero at any given distance that makes them rise above the line of sight.
 
What you are saying is hard to understand? Speed is what causes a flat or non flat trajectory. So lf the center of the scope is two inches above the center of the bore then the bullet is on an upward path to intersect the line of sight. Let's say 100 yards, if the bullet is slow it might go over the line of sight at 75 yards and head down to the line of sight at 100 and continue down. On the other hand if the bullet is fast it will climb upwards until it hits the line of sight at 100 yards and continue climbing until it starts on a downward path that could be at 150 yards depending on speed of bullet.

The scope centerline would have to be 3.6" above the bore centerline to have a 100-yard zero and 1.5" drop at 300 yards with a 39gr SBK @ 4000fps. So, technically possible, but not realistic.

I second the 6mm AI, built my first and used it this winter for coyotes- 26” with a 1-8 twist, berger hunting VLD’s at 3450 FPS which is a modest load. Never had a runner all season- pelt damage was bad either. I use to shoot a 223 with a 53 vmax- but here in south Saskatchewan we have a lot of wind and a lot of open flat land- the Ackley really shines in these conditions.

You have to point the muzzle up intersect the line of sight path. But in realtion to the bore the bullet only drops. Bullets have no lift and you can’t cheat gravity, lol.
Its not cheating gravity it's overcoming it with momentum any 6th grader know's this from Bill Nighe , the science guy. Lol ! If you shot a bullet straight up it would not cheat gravity it would overcome it until it ran out of momentum. So to say a bullet is always dropping in relation to the bore doesn't seem to apply. Unless i am wrong , that only happened once.

Jeesus. I have killed more with a 22 Mag than anything else. Mainly because I take it every where I go.. After reading this thread I may need to rethink that. 300 WM??
You joke, but I've heard nosler 125 ballistic tips out of a 300WSM are spectacular. I don't have personal experience with this combo but it could be a good option, again if you want a rifle that could be readily adapted to other hunting too.

270 Win and 90-gr Speer TNT at well over 3600 fps. Messy.

I get excited, but always hold over the right amount to hit the yote with a 75 .224 ELDM shot from a .22-.250 7.7 twist with H4350. Sometimes the yotes get so close I can only see fur at 4.5 X. I also have a 6mmAI that I use with H4831 or Re23 with 95 Berger VLD hunting bullets for the real smart yotes. When its real cold its hard to crank my scope power ring(s) up or down. Should I get a .22 CM?

There's a guy in Pennsylvania building 300 wsm varmint rigs with 30 " 15 twist barrel , norma brass = 4000 fps with 110 vmax bullets and 1.5" groups at 500 yards.

Often the targets are supine rodents way out there, presenting very low profiles. Any switch to Superformance would involve exhaustive analysis requiring intensive studies of velocity variations. However, the suggestion has enough merit for consideration and will be referred to the coyote control section for further feasibility studies. Hopefully, a favorable decision might be expected upon completion, receipt, and testing using the intended subject rifle barrel upon bi-annual barrel replacement. Due to flash-backs to situations incurred in a former life I sometimes revert back to that crap.:rolleyes:
