300 win mag help

Hey guys. New member, really enjoying reading through all the knowledge on here. I’ve been doing some searching for 300wm info and haven’t really seen what I’m looking for, so here goes:

I just bought a Ruger American Magnum in 300wm (1:10 twist). I bought it for big game and longer range hunting (mule deer, elk, antelope, etc). My brother reloads and I’m going to get him to help me build a load for it. I don’t know a ton about reloading so I’ve been doing a lot of reading and trying to get a baseline. Got a few observations and questions after doing my research.

The popular bullet choices that I’m wanting to try are Berger hunting bullets or Nosler Accubonds (or AccuBond Long Range) somewhere in the 180-200 grain range. Powders that I see mentioned are H4831, H1000 and RL22. A lot of the posts I’ve read are older and from what I understand, there are some newer RL powders that are even better? Open to try whatever is going to give me decent velocity and not be too temp sensitive (I live in Texas and would be hunting here or in the mountains for big game). The Federal 215 primers seem to be the way to go, but please correct me if there’s a better option.

Lastly, brass. I’ve read that there’s a lot of difference in case volume between the different brands of brass so it’s important to use the same brand across all loads. Any I should stay away from? I shot a box of Hornady factory ammo through it this weekend when I sighted it in so if Hornady brass is good stuff, I’ll just pick up some more of that since I’ve already got 20 rounds.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Like I said, I don’t know a ton about reloading so I’m just trying to figure out where to start with this thing. I’ve had my brother build loads for me before so I know the process of working up through the powder range and all that. But neither of us have any experience with 300wm.

I’ve been partial to nosler brass and rem 9 1/2m primer. Never had any luck with 215’s. My powder of choice with 200-210 class bullets is RL25. Great velocity and accuracy. H1000 runs a close second for me.
I’ve been hunting for years with the above mentioned combination.

Which bullets are you running?

H1000 or RL26 if you can find any.
Berger 215’s
Federal GM215’s
WW Brass is ok, quality has slipped considerably, prolly dealing with several culls per 50. Good reports on ADG Brass.
Low to mid 70 grains of powder, work up as you stated, and you should end up somewhere in the mid 2900’s in velocity out of a 26” barrel.
A search over at LR Hunting or LR Only will yield a ton of info on the 215’s out of the 300 WM

H1000 is on my short list. Have seen RL26 mentioned too. LR Hunting seems to be a wealth of info so I’m doing some reading over there now too

Norma brass, 215M, 180 Berger Elite hunter, H1000 or H4831 SC. My hunting 300 likes the 4831 with Elite huters better than 1000 or RL22. H4831SC isn't the speed demon, but has great consistency. Trust me, they won't jump the string!!

I’m not super concerned with velocity. It’s a big bullet with plenty of horsepower so I’m really just looking for accuracy and consistency.

Have you shot elk with the 180s? Some guys say you need a 200+ gr bullet for an animal that big and others say the 180 is plenty. Heck, there’s probably been more elk killed with a .270 or 30-06 than any other round out there.

Nosler brass, Fed GM215M, H1000 and a 215 Berger. Right at 3000 fps out of a 26” Brux. 30 thou off has been good out of a couple 300 Win Mags.

My .300WM shoots better than 1/2 moa using either Norma or Nosler brass, CCI 250 Mag rifle primers, 75 gr. 4831SC, 190 gr hunting Bergers, .010 off. With this load I’m getting a little better than 2,800 ft/sec. Nothing walks more than a step or two.

Let me add: don’t start at 75 grains! Back away from that and cautiously work up! Again, no two guns are alike! I should have put that in the earlier post.

Pardon my ignorance on the subject, but the 210 bergers are labeled as “target hybrid.” What exactly does that mean? Is it a hunting/target bullet?
Look in the hunting bullet category. It’ll be the 210 hunting vld. P/n 30515
There are 3 bullets that berger makes that are 210 grains. One is a long range target and a vld target and the hunting vld.

I believe a properly constructed 165 - 190 bullet will kill any elk that breathes. It is bullet placement plain and simple. If any animal is gut shot with any rifle they are going to leave PERIOD. I have killed elk with a 63 pound bow with a complete pass through. Just my experience.
