Ruger Precision rifle Opinions for newby

I’m wanting to learn precision shooting and maybe try competitions
Ive been shooting and reloading a long time
I read on site about some some great books that are offered
But was wondering if the Ruger Precision rifle would be a good gun to start out with.

Lots of prefit barrels available off the shelf. Timney makes a great trigger for it. ARC mags feed great with the 6&6.5x49, 243/260, 6&6.5x47, etc. Use it until you know exactly what you want.

If I wanted to learn PRECISION shooting, I would buy a good used bench gun. And I would highly recommend the same for you.
If you just wanted to learn to shoot prs matches. The roe is hard to beat for the price. I have been around quite a few of them and some shoot really well others not so much.

Use what you already have to see what you need, like starting from the bottom and working from there. Learn loads, bench / firing line manners, conditions then equipment ( rifle) needed. Ruger is making good stuff but why ware it out till you are ready?

There are some really good deals out there on the Ruger Precision Rifle in 6mm Creedmoor. The bolt typically needs polished to make it run smooth but they are a well designed rifle.

I have a Gen 1 RPR chambered in .243 Win. I’ve always felt it was a good rifle for the money. I’ve shot 1/2 moa groups out to 500 meters and shot steel out to 950 yards. I also took a doe with it at 400 yards last year and it will be going along with me to South Dakota on a prairie dog shoot this year.

Most of the negative comments will come from folks who’ve never shot one. You also have to remember that it’s a mass produced factory rifle and not a hand built custom. There’s always a chance that you might get a good one or a bad one.

I purchased a 6mm CM from GrabaGun for $780. I think that they are like $797 now. Which is still a good price. It's a 2nd Gen so the bolt is not nitrated, but there are a lot of places that will do it for around $35. It shoots very good, but keep in mind that most have a short FB like the one I purchased. It's not a big problem if you are reloading for it. You just have to know where each brand bullet touches the lands and go from there. The problem would be with factory ammo, not knowing which brand may touch or jam and cause pressures. One that comes to mind are the Hornady 108 match ammo, they are jammed about .045" into the lands on a lot of the Ruger RPR 6mm Creedmoors. Good luck and have some fun.

I would pass on the RPR. I would look at a bergara or tikka. However if you get an RPR, don't sink any money into it. You will never recoup any investment. Just go shoot it and spend all your money on glass.

Could not resist.

What type of precision shooting would you like to do? Buying a factory gun, you need to be careful with. I bought an Rpr, and buy the time I had Krieger put a barrel on, trigger, etc. those 2 things alone bring you up to @2000. On this forum I have seen custom and tube guns go for less than that used. Made with the very best parts. So they have 4-500 rounds through them. So what. At this point, I have replaced almost every single part on my Rpr, except upper and lower receiver and half of the bolt. Looking back, I put way to much money in a factory rifle. It is Stupid accurate. But, if I could go back and I knew better, I would have bought a used tube gun off here and replaced the barrel down the road. To get a factory gun, (in my opinion) cost a lot of money to get to a competition level and wonder if it’s worth it. You can also go to bob whites shooters corner and get a used pro benchrest rifle 6ppc or whatever, for 1300 up. You won’t find anything to match the accuracy you will get from those. All depends on what you want to do. I’m just speaking from my mistakes. Saying that, Rpr is my fav factory rifle. The whole rifle is completely user parts replaceable and there is tons of stuff on the market for them.

I would looking through a scope on one if possible. I personally don't like the AR style design with the stock because the scope has to sit high to be able to align your eye with the scope. It's just not as comfortable as shooting my Tikka CTR. If you shoot ARs comfortably, then it's probably not going to be a problem to you.

+! Never seen 1 yet that didn't shoot well for the $$$.

If you're looking for a low cost chassis'ed rifle in 6.5 CM, than an RPR is hard to beat. That being said, if you can spend more, I'd opt for the Tikka. They're just better actions (smoother, straighter) than a 700 or RPR. An RPR will get the job done though, and generally has accuracy better than most can shoot.

I did this very same deal last fall. Needless to say, I may have gotten a bad one. I did enjoy shooting it up till the time it went back to Ruger. Factory ammo was seating so deep into the lands I had to virtually slam the bolt closed. I'd like to think when it comes back it going to shoot the wonderful penny sized at groups at 250 yards and some of the erratic ones will disappear. Time will tell.

I bought an rpr when they were new in 243. It shot in the .3-.5s within a hair if a reccomended load. I was kind of annoyed at how well it shot compared to my nicer rifles. I never fell in love with it. I never got my money back out if it. With nothing to compare it to, you should be happy with it. You can change the buttstock, handgaurd and trigger. You can get a few doodads to upgrade the bolt. You probably can never make it light if you lose interest in it’s function, but you can change calibers within limits of the same family. I’d look at something that has a 700 or common footprint as I tend to change interests with the weather.

I have some measure of closure on this issue, albeit not the closure I was hoping for. I received another brand new RPR from Classic Firearms. I wholly expected to mount my scope back on it, run a couple patches down the barrel, and begin the break in process. Sadly, it was not meant to be.

This one has the exact same problem as the one I sent back. I could barely close the bolt and had to struggle to open it.

It's my contention that Ruger has a problem with barrels in this chambering and I can't figure out why no one seems to be talking about it.
