When "upgrading" triggers using factory Savage be careful with what you are buying. There is one trigger, two sears, and two springs. The non PTA actions come with one sear and the PTA comes with a different sear. The non PTA actions will have a "varmint" spring which is lighter or the non varmint spring which is heavier. The "varmint" spring is also what is in the PTAs. If you are wanting a PTA "trigger" what you really need is the sear and I have seen people only selling the trigger(as the PTA trigger) many times. As far as actions go with current production(and most past) two digits such as 11 or 12 are short actions and three digits such as 111 or 112 are long. The third digit is what Savage uses to distinguish between "varmint" and "hunting" and stainless, blued, or matte. The letters after are geared towards the stock and magazine configuration. Having said that Savage is very bad at being consistent and variations may occur.

What you need to do to fix it is, first order some .140 ball bearings on E-bay. (9/64) When you get them remove your extractor, remove the spring and clean it and the hole it came out of, add a little light lube, and put it back together replacing the stock ball with the new larger .140 ball. Oh, and clean the extractor while you have it out. This will fix most of them. If it does not, you need to order a new extractor. (use the larger ball with the new one too)
And NOT a left handed one in the bunch, but nothing new, ALL LEFT HAND shooters to the back of the bus or buy an AR

Yes, and I replace the ejector spring. I usually purchase all the bolt parts from Midway or Gun Shack. The new ejector pins have more length to them. It is turned down and goes inside the spring. This prevents the spring from being collapsed and weakened. Your ejector should be strong, hard to push down with your fingernail, if you can push it down easily then it's weak and will not hold tension against the extractor and flip the case out.
Your not supposed to mention Cabela or your post get taken down. The story I got was that some Cabela's do not owner their sales price. My post about this on sale was taken down and that was what I was told by a moderator for the reason. I am 46 and have not once ran into this even after the forced buyout of Cabala's by BassPro via hedge-fund. In fact they normally try to save you more money and try to help you find things out of stock at that location. Twice a year they are normaly on sale. Right now and again around father's-day.
I own 2 of them now one for $319 the other $339 at Cabala's.
That is why you look it over before you take it. Does not matter if it is a Savage ot a Glock or at any store once you accept it you have to warranty it with OEM but refuse it and you are not out anything. A big box can reorder or if they have 50 in stock just go pull another one from the gun safe. Went through over 12 of a particular handgun before I found one that would lock open on last round. Tried swapping out magazines etc but no go. Lucky for me that store had 50 of them on hand!

The Savage Target AccuTrigger with the red trigger has had some issues from a safety stand point. As long as you do not want anything insane like a 3oz. trigger the standard Savage AccuTriger as it leaves the factory is amazing and it can easily be taken down to 1.6lbs. with no spring changes or stoning and mine both break like glass. With a little bit of experience and skill you can get it to 1lbs. no problem with no safety issues.
For the record I am on the record for "HATING" short actions and I laugh at people that decide to build on a short action and then complain about COAL issues trying to feed from the magazine with heavy VLD bullets!
That said I own 2 12FV's because the price is cheaper than I can buy just the action for a build for. I know I can either chose wisely what cartridge I pick or I can be mindful and chose my bullet and seating depth to accommodate the magazine box limits! If one is over the age of 12 and does some research no need to let COAL and magazine feeding be an issue.
The stock is terrible as are all affordable rifles from anyone with the Ruger American being the best out of the terrible cheap plastic stocked economy rifles. You need to open up the barrel channel on the 12FV to make up for how flexible it is. Pillar and Glass bed the action a bit proud! I am planing on doing a wood stock for at least one of them. Not sure if I will do it myself or have Richards Microfit do the heavy lifting for me!
Standard 20-30 MOA base and a scope with plenty of adjustment. It is heavy with that heavy target barrel so anything other than prone or bench resting and you better take up weight lifting. I have 2 torn rotator cuffs tendons in each shoulder though so I have issues.
Winter has limited my range and load development and range time. I do not shoot well in gloves with out a winter trigger guard which is not an option and my winter range choices limit my range as well. In fact at some point I want to make some bottom metal that will accommodate winter gloves for an XL sized hand. To get 1000m of farm field access or a public 1000m range I have to drive hours from my current home.
Oh and my first Savage ownership was last Fathers-Day Cabela sale 12FV and now I own 2 of them! I am official a fan of the ugly and designed to be cheap to produce Savage action! From a machine design and fit and finish stand point it is terrible like a cheap watch. From the stand point of utility and ease of production it is shear GENIUS!
I have about 13 or more match grade barrels sitting around and I can not wait to see if I can get them to 1/4 MOA with no blue printing or just truing the receiver face and barrel nut and lapping the lugs mildly!

Just a fyi. Sportsmans sells the 12 FV in 22-250 only. My shooting buddy and I have built 4 20 Practicals off the Cabelas 12FV starting with the .223 and the .204 Rifles . We have changed out stocks, barrels and triggers. We are using the Shilen Select Match grade barrels, Rifle Basic Triggers and Bell and Carlsen Varmint Stocks. These are NOT pack around rifles. They go from the truck to the Booger Bench. Incredible accuracy.
Just got an email from Savage informing me that the rebate for the 12fv I bought in Nov has been approved. An other 8-10 weeks until it is mailed.
