Global Benchrest Association? - Harry Jones 1000yd Memorial Range

I find it hilarious that the IBS can’t figure out online membership, let alone online voting. I have to mail a check for a membership like it’s 1970. Who the hell even carries checks anymore? There’s no purpose in today’s age.

I suck and only shoot for fun so I couldn’t care less about world records, but it’s the little things and attention to detail that make this whole International Global Worldwide United States Benchrest Association Organization thing seem a little bush league.

Is the new fangled Global Benchrest Association going to have a website and be a little more up to date and in the 21st century to where I at least can sign up online? Hell my local bowling league even has online scheduling and signups and it’s not even “international”.

I’m also the only person I know under the age of 35 that shoots Benchrest besides kids shooting with their parents. Maybe I’m just too much a part of the “new generation” to expect consistency in rules, online membership, consistent record keeping, and some basic organizational skills from people accepting my money for a “membership”.

End of rant. I’ll just pay my dues and keep accepting the status quo of a mediocrely ran league. At least I’m shooting.

Really no use for checks? I still pay for stuff with checks when someone is going to tack on 3% for using a credit card. People that buy from me on this site mostly pay me with one of their personal checks, so most of us are antiquated I guess and another thing, you don't have to so call mail in a check for an IBS membership. You can go to any IBS sanctioned match and pay your yearly dues right at the match. You don't have to send a check to Joan Borden to join.

Well yea I know I can show up in person and join. That’s almost as antiquated as writing a check :)

I’m just amazed that the Benchrest community can’t get into the 21st century, get organized, and ultimately; get along. Twenty different organizations with different sets of rules and organizations with no website to find information, and 10 different sets of classes, etc doesn’t grow the sport. It causes confusion.

I mean really, who thought yet ANOTHER organization was a good idea? Grow up and work out your differences and quit making people join a handful of different organizations to shoot matches. I can drive a few hours to Williamsport, a few to Ohio, and stay locally and shoot in matches and in order to do so I have to join three different organizations. That’s stupid. Who thinks that’s a good idea?

People don’t want to pay yet another set of dues, follow yet another set of rules, keep track of yet another set of records, learn yet another scoring system, keep track of yet another set of points, etc.

Nothing is free, if you think the costs to run a club is just paid for by match fees, you need to get involved in one then. The clubs have lots of expenses you never see. It is not cheap and every year it costs more money. Leases, Insurance, electric, pins, Plaques are just a few of the costs involved. Matt

Of course I know that. That’s why I pay a yearly membership fee to Harry Jones. I don’t mind paying a fee, but I do mind paying three different ones because “grown men” get upset over a point system and can’t work out their differences so they start a new Global International Super Duper Benchrest League and then ask for money after people already joined the “other” league because they waited until a month before the first match to announce the change.

So I don't claim to understand all the politics involved here but this is my understanding of the crux of the issue. I shot short-range BR back in the 90's. I was a member of the IBS then as I am now. The Super Shoot and Nationals had huge turnouts back then. The problem is they don't now but the IBS is still focused on and managed by SR shooters in spite of the fact that SR numbers are dwindling and LR sports are growing in popularity.

I was present at a meeting last fall when this new, then unnamed, organization was discussed. The hope then, was that issues between some present and the IBS could still be worked out. Unfortunately, that did not happen and we now have a new organization that will hopefully meet the needs of all shooters, not just specific classes of shooters. We will have to see how it works out.

I agree that in a perfect world, we would only have one set of rules and one sanctioning body. We don't live in a perfect world, but we do live in a Country where we are blessed to be able to engage in shooting sports of our choice. Many are not that fortunate. While MY hope is that the various organizations will pull together and adopt standardized rules, I won't wait for that. I want to take advantage of one of the many rights we are granted and shoot as many long range matches as I am able to. If it means joining 3 or 4 organizations I consider it a price I am willing to pay to do something I love.

Dave.

Well said. I can respect all of that while disagreeing with some of it.

I’m just a little upset the “leadership” of the organizations can’t get along more.

Again, well said Dave.

When a sanctioning continuously changes rules, the format, and point structure, year after year after year, it creates question, chaos, and non-uniformity. All of which can be self-destructive, that's now finally boiling over, is how I see it playing out and the why.

If anyone can explain how having 3 separate formats in one discipline is uniform, and not causing chaos, I'm all ears?
If anyone can explain how breaking 25-years of tradition to the LRM Program, is not upsetting to people, I'm all ears?
If anyone can explain how snatching Nationals away from ranges (that have held Nationals) over petty reasoning, is not causing chaos, I’m all ears?
Why wouldn't ranges/clubs finally have enough of all the year to year changes, breaking of traditions, and format chaos, not desire a sanction change?

Personally haven't shot an IBS-1000 match in 2-years after being active for 12 consecutive years prior, do to all the liberalism in format, breaking of tradition, and continues changes year after year. Also was labeled to be: "to controversial" by an IBS official(s), after I was asked by a club to referee and attend again. Hated to see this day come, but have seen it coming for several years. I understand the why's and fully support the reasoning for GBA and the desires for a change.

Donovan, I think you will soon find out that the GBA. rules will be as they were in the beginning and are very similar to Williamsport. A relay win in score or group and a shoot off for them.... jim

Go to a PRS match if you dont think benchrest needs a change. Look and see how many sign up for just a club match

Maybe that you don't need the extreme accuracy and the work it takes to get it. Yes they run around where 75 year old guys can't, but the old guys are willing to do the work..... Doesn't matter much anyway, when the dems. get in office..... jim

Donovan If I remember Alex was offering a free gun and Ammo to shoot at a match to help get new shooters. You trying to say if that person got lucky and broke a record it wouldn't count?

Joe Salt

When I tried Benchrest and took advantage of Alex's free gun and ammo I did what I thought was the right thing to do. I believe it was / is required to join the IBS and I think the club to shoot the gun. I also paid the fees for the match just in case I did well so it would count. All money well spent in support of what was being offered as far as i'm concerned!

Dave You did the right thing, all I was trying to say is when we get people to join our club you don't have to join the first two matches! This gives people a chance to at least try the sport before they start throwing all kinds of money into something like us nut cases. Had my buddy try it three years ago, he payed his shooting fee and I supplied the rifle and Ammo. And know he is buying everything he sees. We are trying to look out for the beginners. And that is another burr in my saddle, new shooters should be given Alibi's, there first year within reason. I feel people get very nervous and tend to make mistakes. And if your on the line by yourself and get DQ'd they tend to not come back.

The way I look at it is you don't have to pay anything. You make your choices and live life. It is America and people can choose to start up whatever they want. You should wish Global Benchrest and the rest of them all good luck.
