Ruger American Action Timing issues

Does anybody have any experience with timing a Ruger American action. A friend has the distinctive rough closing that the bolt stops after cocking piece hands off to the sear. He has had the bolt apart and the assembly looks right to me. Is there an adjustment for the trigger sear to fix this?

P.S. If your mind makes you think this is a feeding issue, it is playing tricks on you.

Interesting, I had not thought of this on a three lug. 2 lug all day long. Thanks for the suggestion, this will be checked out.

First off, does he understand "how" to time bolt throw on a trigger in the first place? Sounds like he does not. You can't time a trigger by "adjusting the sear" unless you have an adjustable trigger hanger which only comes on the high end custom actions like BAT, Borden, Kelby, etc. Otherwise timing has to be done by modifying the cocking piece, which I wouldnt suggest attempting unless he knows what he is doing. You can completely disable the rifles ability to cock and hold the firing pin or reduce firing pin strength to where it is ineffective for proper ignition if done incorrectly. Then the rifle is dead in the water until parts are replaced with new OEM.

Second, I dont know what a person is to expect from such a low budget mass produced rifle? I'm sure they can be accurate and yadda yadda...But if he wants a smooth good quality, yet affordable factory action, I suggest he gives Tikka a good look. They are smooth and accurate right out of the box. Just my opinion.

That's my thought. The guy has a ~$300 rifle that he expects to fit and function like a $3-4K custom? Probably not going to happen - unless he throws A LOT of money at it.
