300wsm tikka build help.

I have a tikka t3 300wm I'm using to build a 300wsm on. I'm waiting on my carbon six 26inch 300wsm barrel to come in. I already have my stock, the stockys longrange carbon fiber. It is cut for the cdi bottom metal. My question is about the bottom metal and magazines, cdi has the option for long or short action. It's my understanding that the tikka actions are the same length. I'm guessing the bottom metal is different to account for differant size magazines. 300wsm would be short action, but would I be able to use 300wm magazines for a 300wsm, I would like to be free to seat bullets as far as I would like.

I’d go with the long mags, myself. Your question made me get up and look at the book. The difference between the max C.O.L. of the WM and the WSM is only .48.

I just put together a Tikka 338 Win Mag and I have some 300 WSM brass. I can check on the feeding question tomorrow, if you like.

That's what I was thinking. Mainly trying to clarify that the 300wsm will feed properly out of the 300wm magazines. Thanks for the help.

The WSM cases do not feed via the 300 Win. Mag magazines. The "slot" is too narrow at the rear end, resulting in an incapacitating bind. For the WSM, Tikka widens, and shortens the magazine length via a longer "block" at the rear end of the box. I purchased a pair of the 300 Win. Mag. magazines, hoping the WSM cases would feed, so all of the case-capacity could be used, along with magazine feeding.:( It's possible that some judicious used of a Dremel, or, a mill, could render them useful - I haven't attempted that yet. Better, would be for the Tikka folks to offer full length boxes.:eek:RG

Hi Chris: Randy is right, as he usually is but your question isn’t quite answered. I pulled out my new build and put a 300WSM shell in the magazine. It fit and started to feed. Then it stopped. I pulled it apart and found out that it was stopped by rails inside the action. My new build is based on an old M695 action. I thought that maybe the actions HAD changed internally so I went and dug out my T3 in 300 Win Mag. Just like Randy said, the WSM was too big (by very little) and jammed in the plastic Tikka magazine. It jammed in the sides of the mag as much as the lips. I pulled the mag out and checked the action. The WSM cartridge fit thru the rails inside the action, easily.
It seems you’re down to a magazine issue. The WSM case fit in the old metal 695 mag but not the new plastic T3 mag. You have a width problem more than a length problem
You need to get a hold of a mag for the long action cdi bottom metal and try it. Sorry but I don’t have one. We both learned something today, anyway, so it wasn’t wasted time. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. Was trying not to spend the 70 bucks on a cdi magazine just to check, but I might just have to. I'm not afraid to try and open up the magazine lips a little if I have to, or at least see if it helps.

Chris, we have a LOT of good helpful members, here. You should post a new question to see if any of them has one and a WSM case to try. You might get your answer. Me? I’d order the mag and make it work, but I do crazy all the time!;)

By the way, welcome to the forum!

Josh

Now that’s good thinking! I have to admit that I’m older and not too familiar with the magnum cartridges, due to my dislike of being kicked by a mule. I have a kid that likes them, so I have a few.;)

I converted both my Tikkas to LA. One was a 300 wsm and the other a 260 chambered in 284. All Tikka actions are the same length. They just use different bolt stops and spacers in the magazines. You can make any of them LA by buying the LA bolt stop and getting a LA magazine.

You should be good already since the 300wm was long action. I was able to get the LA magazines to work by hogging out the interior with a chisel and emery cloth. It takes about 30 minutes each but that worked for me. Mountain Tactical is now making wsm long action magazines for the Tikka bottom metal. I bought one and they are very nice.

The stock I have is inlet for cdi bottom metal. I tried to fit the OEM and it doesn't fit. But I did check out mountain tactical and their 300rum aics magazines say they work with the wsm. So thanks for pointing me their direction, I got my clarification.
