Whats a good break in load for a 284 with a 180 hybrid? ive loaded up some with 55.0 4831SC, does that sound ok?
Perfect, I figured I would be anywhere from 55.0-56.0 when I get something worked up. I've just read where guys were starting at as low a 52.0 to break in.Sounds pretty normal for that powder and a 180 hybrid.
I use close to Lloyds for fireforming shehane as well, 54 gr. Shot an 800 out of 800 with it at a 600 yd fclass match along w a 200-17x. Another benefit of the lighter load is it work hardens the primer pockets a hair before going full load.
Straight 284[/QUOTE
Can anyone give me a COAL for the Berger 180 VLD's in necked up 6.5-284 brass when either on the lands or some set distance off the lands, eg -.020? For straight .284 Win. Chamber reamed with Win/Lapua reamer, .317 neck, .220 freeborn.
Thanks!

Thanks! This post is a few years old now and countless 284 barrels, now on a few Shehane barrels as well have gone in an out of this rifle lol Early on I was using Bartlein and 55.2 ended up as my match load working up at 2830, when I switched to Brux, the same reamer, it only took 53.6 to get to the 2830 node. Found it interesting how one barrel maker to another caused such big shifts in powder needed for velocityTo the OP, dont confuse Shehane loads with 284 loads. Don’t guess where you’re pressure will be, find out. Take a few pieces of brass and incrementally load up from say 54 gns to 56. That should give you and idea where the max charge for you’re rifle is. A little work now will save you aggravation later.
For example my 284 shows pressure at 54.9 of H4831. i’ve shot a few ocw loads at (I think) 55.1 that trashed the pockets on 5 rounds.
Just my 2 cents. E
