6x47 Lapua build

Thanks for all of the tips!! I ruined a lot of cases the last time I necked down. Will put the advice to use! marc

McGraw, Sir, I carefully screw the body die down until I see the neck being sized just short of the neck-shoulder junction. I wouldn't try screwing die down to touch shell holder, unless I could see neck not sizing far enough. Just my personal experience! Idaho-45

I have 200 Virgin 6.5x47L brass that just showed up in the mail couple days back. I'm planning on sizing & loading these for my 6x47L this weekend. I don't forsee any problems doing it with the "2 step method" again...... Idaho-45

McGraw, Sorry, I failed to answer the second part of your questions..... I actually had purchased some 'used' 6x47 bras to start shooting in my new rifle. Long- story-short, that turned out to be a mistake. But, what it did do for me was to give me a few cases fired in MY rifle, so I could figure out where to set my FL sizer to bump back the shoulder approx. .002". Some others might jump in here with better ideas, & info. But, since you don't have your rifle yet, you might just do the initial body die sizing, & only FL size a few, like you said. altho, I'm thinking as long as you don't push the shoulder back any on your new cases you should be fine. Anyone can correct me on this, if I am wrong here!!!!!! Good Luck with your new 6x47L. I'm sure you'll LOVE IT!!!!! Idaho-45

Thanks much Idaho-45
Well I was trying to make it to hard to start with. You made it simple by saying to just measure new cases, and to not bump the shoulder any further back than it was to start with. Good suggestions on how to set the body die too. Yes, getting excited about this rifle. 6mm should be a good fit for trajectory and low recoil.

I never bumped shoulder back on new brass. I have never had a chamber where the bump on fired brass was less than what new brass measured as typical differences between go and no-go gauges is .004 so fired brass has always been longer than new. As such, setting your die to bump once-fired brass .002 will probably not bump shoulders on new brass.

Well I guess necking down the brass isn't as "easy" as I thought. Thanks for all the great info fellas I definitely appreciate it and it sounds like others do too. I have a Forster fl sizing on the way but am still a little confused if I need a body die or a bump die for the two step process.

I vote Body Die, Sir......... But, please don't feel like its not that easy. I sized down those 200 Virgin Lapua cases this past weekend. No issues at all. One pass with the 6x47L body die, They a pass through a Forster FL sizer. Ended up with 200 nicely necked-down cases, ready to load. Just for an FYI, I don't screw the body die down to touch the shell holder. I carefully screw it down until I see the neck being sized to just slightly above the Neck-Shoulder junction! (The Redding Body Die is really not that expensive, knowing that the sizing should go pretty easily using it)......... One change I did do was to use Hornady One Shot on those cases, instead of Imperial Sizing Wax that I've used in the past. Good Luck with your venture!!!!!! Idaho-45

Thank you sir!

1-8 with 105's is perfect.

I have a 6-47 along with a few others. I LOVE my 6-47....it is my favorite rifle....just not for serious BR work.

6BR, 6BRA, or even a Dasher. If making brass for the dasher seems like to much work you can always have it custom made by one of the guys on this sight or use a reamer made for the new Norma brass.

You didn't say what kind of BR work........100-300, 600, 1000?

Again...LOVE my 47...just not for BR.

Good luck, and WELCOME,
Tod
So if the 47 is not a real bench cartridge were does it really shine or do it's best?

Don't get me wrong...it is VERY accurate.....just not as much as my Dasher. The 6-47 won't agg with my dasher....it will shoot seriously small groups....just not as consistent. My 6-47 is on a Rem platform that I have 2 different stocks for. One is the factory VS stock that has been bedded and weight added to it and the other a full out 1K stock...MBR Tracker.

Mine gets used for banging steel out to 4 digit distances and varmint patrol!!

So after a pass through the body die, do you screw the fl die all the way to the shell holder?
