Ammo for 100 and 200 yds. Survey

What is everybody shooting? Why? Any particular reason other than your gun likes it ?

Your question is hard to answer because each Rimfire likes different ammo.... You just have to go out and shoot different brands till you find what your gun likes... CCI standered velocity shoots well in alot of guns after that the sky is the limit...

I've been doing a bit of shooting at 210yds with V-22s, as our match director likes to throw in at least one stage with targets out to 200-300yds. Often as not, ammo that shoots great groups at 50yds starts to open up quite a bit by the time you get out past 150yds with it. I've tried several lots of Lapua Center-X, SK Rifle Match, Lapua Polar Biathlon, and Eley Match at 200, and one or two lots of Center-X & Polar Biathlon looked promising. But the lot of Polar I have right now has rather large ES numbers when run over the chronograph, and it shows on steel, with faster rounds landing at least a couple of inches higher than the group formed by average speed rounds - and ditto for the slower rounds. This is the worst lot of Polar that I've bought, so I'm going to go back to looking for an exceptional lot of Center-X. If that doesn't pan out, I've shot some Eley Match recently that's looking quite a bit more uniform over the chrono than Polar. While I'm not crazy about paying more than $15/box of 22RF ammo, but at the same time, I'm not sure I'll be able to get what I need for those longer shots without dropping that kind of money. Will be looking to try the SK LR Match when it hits the shelves, as well as doing some lot testing with SK Flatnose Basic.

Thanks , I’m getting into RF at longer distance than I ever shot with this round. Most LR was 308. I had it in my mind that at longer distances I may be thinking of a different round? Take away from hand gun silhouette days. My ram loads were much different than chickens , pigs and turkeys. That was mostly related to “knock down” power. Even so velocity (ie ram loads /kinetic energy) is important to maintain stability. This is fun to play with. Still cheaper than 6.5/284 or 308. Thanks for your feedback.

For me, a good lot of Eley Match works for 50, 100 & 200 yds. As others have said, your rifle will tell you what it likes best. All SK products but I like the Rifle Match in my Anschutz 1710DHB and 452 CZ American, 452 Lux and 452 ultra lux. SK standard +, Pistol Match also shoot great.

I have a Kidd Supergrade, CZ 455 Varmint, and a Tikka T1X. The Eley made Wolf MT and ME, SK Std+ and Match Rifle, Eley Target and Club, and Lapua CenterX shoot very well. I have tried the higher grade stuff, but it shoots about the same as these. The current lot of Wolf ME shoots light out in my T1X, see below post.

Something that I found that works for me is to start with high quality ammo such as Eley Match or Tenex or Lapua Center X or Midas +.
THEN, weigh each round & segregate by 0.2 grains or less. Obviously, keep the similar weights together & shoot them together.
Logically, the lead is by far the heaviest / most dense, part of any rimfire round, therefore, the variations in weight will primarily be in the lead projectile. (consider what a 0.2 gr of propellant would change in the tiny .22 rf case)
I have found better consistency by doing as I suggest above.

You also must understand that the ballistics of the .22 rf are dreadful. The bullet itself, a heel based round nosed or semi flat point (Eley) has a very poor ballistics coefficiecnt (BC) It is also light and slow. All of these add up to a bullet that will not be highly satisfactory at long range.
This is borne out by looking at the official targets for NRA smallbore prone competition. The 50 meter (55 yds) the X ring is about 3/8" while the X ring of the 100 yd target is about 1"
Would be nice to have a .22rf bullet with a nice long pointed tip and a smooth boattail. Maybe someday.

My Annie:
Eley Target (Yellow); cheap and shoots good to 150y+
Center X; Relatively inexpensive and all around it shoots really well
Eley Tenex; Stupid expensive, but when hits count out to 200-300y, it's about the best you can do with low ES (for 22lr)

Really depends on your rifle. Shoot groups at 50y, then again at 100y. You may see the a big difference. Run then out as far as you can and compare.

SK Pistol Match (green) has been good for some guys too. Maybe worth trying a box.

Eley subsonic hollow points aren't as accurate, but they're surprisingly consistent in my barrels. I just wish they would expand out there.

In my V22 Lapua Midas+ had an ES of 24 and Eley Match was 21 FPS for ES. Both grouped comparably at 100 yards, haven’t had them further yet.

Flatlander, I have observed same as you, ammo with great accuracy opening up at distance. Also note a different tuner setting will usually tighten it up at 100 and that setting will usually do ok at 200. Realize you are shooting PRS-NRL style matches where a tuner might be impractical, but it could conceivably lessen the strain of the ammo chase for (accurate +low ES + $$$$) Intend to see if there’s anything in it for 300-400, etc when weather permits. Greatly interested in the Vudoos. Plenty very solid guys having real world excellent results. Seymour

I've shot a bit of Eley Edge out of a Krieger-bbl'd V-22 at 50yds; didn't shoot quite as well as SK Rifle Match or Pistol Match, so I didn't take it out to 100. Eley Match (black box EPS) has been more consistent at 210yds than anything else I've shot recently, but I'm not impressed enough with it to buy a full case. Actually, I called Dan at the Lapua Test Center yesterday & spoke at length with him about sending out one of the V-22s to test with Center-X, Polar Biathlon, & Midas+. Got the form filled out, pulled the Krieger-bbl'd one out of the stock (don't believe I've got 1000rds through the newer Bartlein Kukri yet), and have been working on finding suitable packing materials so I can get it sent off to test. I was hoping they'd have various SK grades (flatnose basic, biathlon sport, rifle match) in quantity to test also, but learned that they focus mainly on Lapua ammo. Might get some SK testing done if they've got it, but might not be possible.

In the past, I'd had some luck in asking Grafs to send various lots of SK Rifle & Pistol Match for testing, and wound up buying a couple of cases of the best RM I'd found, plus another case of PM. I phoned in an order to them for some loading dies, Peterson brass, and various lots of SK Std+ & Flatnose Basic last week. The order arrived yesterday, and was disappointed to find that they'd simply packed a brick of Std+ & one of Flatnose Basic, all boxes in each brick out of the same lot. To add insult to injury, the lot# of FN Basic is the same lot I'd gotten from Powder Valley several weeks before, so I'm not even going to get to test a different lot of that stuff. I was surprised that Grafs wasn't listed as one of the Lapua suppliers that deal with the Lapua Testing Center in the info Dan sent - perhaps there's a reason? No problem, some good friends of mine are listed, and they're within easy driving distance of me, so I'll deal with them after Dan tests my V-22 in Mesa.
