284 win - sporter with RL17 140's

All, I am a long time lurker and recently joined. I have a Sporter weight 284 win that I am using rl15 and 140gr Nosler ABs and getting in the low 2800 fps. The rifle is a NULA mod 20 and has a 22" bbl. Does anyone have experiance with RL 17 with 140's? and am I expecting too much to think this should be a 2900 -3000 fps rifle/ctg ?

With the 180 berger and RL-17 I get 2925 with accuracy. My load in a bench rifle

RL-17 has a burn rate close to, BOTH of the 4350's ( slightly slower ) and worked FINE, in my son's 7mm-08 with, 150 ELD-X's at 2,850 FPS ( 44.5 gr's IIRC).
R17, is "Ranked" at #115, H 4350 #114 and IMR @ #113 on MY, "Burn Rate" Chart. 640 Yard groups were,.. 2 3/4 inches with, a Sporter weight, Tikka T3X, barrel !
Pretty good stuff if, it works for you ! For less than, $30.00, I'd personally, give it a try !
The 140 AccuBond's, work real "well" on Elk/Deer and it is, a TOUGH Bullet ! Work up load's, carefully ! Good luck and keep us posted !

If your using Nosler data they used 24" barrel and it's pretty old data been used since manual #5. I know 20 let you seat out to 3.000", I have model 24. You might want to look at data that seating bullet out vs Nosler @ 2.800"

This is something that may help

Hodgdon has data for 284, 139gr Hornady @ 2.915" start 52gr/H-4350 @ 2840fps and max of 57gr/H-4350 @ 3079fps. It's not problem but 22" barrel.

My 284, I'm using 52.5gr/R-17 @ 2983 fps with 160gr AB and it long throated, 27" Lilja barrel. I have other hunting rifles so 284 is just one of my hunting rifles and haven't shot anything lighter than 160gr.

I think been few article on that model 20 and if you could get hold of Mel he may have some loads.

Well good luck

Interesting article. I built a SA 284 for about the same purpose as the one in the article. Mine was built to run 162s at 2.950 OAL for DBMs. I'm using the RL17 and also run a 25" barrel. I'm getting roughly 3000 fps consistently and groups that stay inside 2" at 500 yards. If I remember right, 53.0 grains is my load. Obviously in a LA set up, velocities could be better with longer OALs. My LA 284 is an internal mag setup and OAL cartridges are 3.25. I shoot primarily 180s and with RL17 can achieve velocities over 3000 fps with a 30" barrel very accurately.
