280 Imp

I bought this rifle used and was told it was a Hart barrel with a 9 twist.. Turns out its a 10 twist and I can only assume its a Hart. Any suggestions on a good load for this rifle with the 10 twist barrel? Accuracy trumps speed as it will be used for hunting mostly. Thanks!!

The 160 Sierra Game King should stabilize just fine. You can kill just about anything you want with that bullet. I have had good results with H4350, H4831, H1000 and even Retumbo with that weight class in the .280AI. The 150 Game king would also be a good bullet but I haven't messed with anything lighter than the 160 weight class.

I a have been shooting the straight .280 since the first year the 700 BDL was chambered for it. I shot the first one out then had a 10 twist Hart barrel installed. I used it for many years shooting some Hunter class Silhouette and deer. On a trip to Idaho to visit and hunt with my son we both shot 500 yd mule deer with it and it did not come home with me. It has killed quite a few deer and elk now with him and my grandchildren. I built another for myself with a 10 twist Hart Varmnit weight barrel same as the first. I have sight setting to 1000 yds for it with a long whitetail kill of over 700 yds. I load to velocities exceeding most of what I see in print for the AI version. I use mostly 4831SC or RL19, both with mag primers. 140 Ballistic tips. 139 Spire points, 150 Sirocco, and 160 Speer BT soft points have all worked well. If you want to shoot groundhogs or something else small 120 Horn. hp shoot in a small hole. Enjoy, it's a great cartridge.

140 Accubond and N165 was a combo that I started out with on a 280AI. Assume you know that the chamber is going to be slightly different than the 280 ack imp sammi/nosler. Redding makes dies for the older standard.

How is it different? Nosler used Ackleys design to crush .003-4 on standard 280?

RL-26 AND 140GR BT OR 140GR SIERRAS GAMECHANGERS IS A WICKED COMBO

280AI was new for me in 2018. I built a 280AI on a Sav 110 with a Bartlein #3 and on a pre 64 Win M70 with a Bartlein #3 fluted. I bought a Kimber 280AI.

All (3) rifles got the same load: 140 gr Nos Accubond 56.2 gr IMR 4166, 3.34" Nosler brass 3100 fps

I shot (3) antelope and (1) deer with the Winchester.
I shot (1) deer with the kimber.
The Sav did not hunt.
Both the Winchester and the Kimber were shooting under 2" 3 shots at 200 yards, and the Kimber was a lot lighter.

I have been shooting some Ackley improved cartridges for 16 years. Mostly not worth the trouble. But when I can get preformed [And concentric!] brass from Nosler, the deal got better.

I'm using 63 gr of Re22 with a 140 gr Sierra spitzer and getting 3195 fps and 5/8" 100 yd groups. That's from a 26" 10 twist Douglas barrel.
