6.5 x 47 Lapua OAL

I am selecting parts for a 6.5 x 47 rifle build, but one thing I wish to ensure is that my loaded rounds will fit in a magazine. I am wondering what maximum OAL I could expect with 123 and 130 grain bullets pushed out to the lands. It would be good to know OAL for 139+ bullets as well, in the event I want to try those.

Thanks,

Phil

We’re goung to need to know what magazine.

I can tell you a few things though.

I run a .170 freebore, and a 140 Elite hunter will hit 2.800 on a fresh chamber when touching the lands. That’s more or less a copy of the 140 Hybrid with a thinner jacket.

Jumping a 130 Hybrid 20 thou I get a COAL of around 2.710 depending on the lot.

Using the 130 Hybrid I’m a factory 700 box I never lost the ability to chase using a .170 freebore in my last barrel.

I’m back in the AI mags and running 140 Elites now.

You may be happiest with a .125-.140 if light bullets are your goal.

What mag? what is the internal of the mag 0.000". what free bore? The good news is, in my opinion .02 it is a true S/A cartridge. Mine has a .198" FB and with a 140 Hybrid kissing the lands this lot measures 2.825" That leaves me .035" in a standard AI mag with spacer still in.

Thanks for your reply. The magazine I will be using (and have), is one you are not likely familiar with. It is a Howa polymer 10 round. It measures about 2.830" from one end to the other on the inside. If this turned out to be insufficient, I would consider moving to different bottom metal/mags that can accommodate longer rounds.

The gunsmith I would be using uses a reamer that has 0.109" freebore, which was surprisingly short, but would help keep the rounds shorter.

Yes, lighter bullets would be the primary focus. Shooting long distance is very difficult because of where I live, so lighter bullets make sense for the shorter ranges.

Thanks.

Phil

My reamer has .123" freebore, and 130 VLD's are in the lands a bit at 2.740" OAL in a new barrel. Perfect fit for a factory 700 BDL magazine box, with plenty of room to chase the lands. I wouldn't fret the .109" freebore.

Personally, I don't think the 47 case has enough ass to push 140's unless you run a long barrel and lotsa freebore....

My 6.5x47 has as big an ass as I do, I am getting 2775- 2850 depending on which powder I am using. That’s enough ass for me, and the 1000 yrd steel. My 140 elite hunters from Berger fit just fine in my Mag .
And also remember, most short actions cycle 308 parent cases and the 6.5x47 as it says 47mm is already 7mms shorter. Should be plenty of room

My 47 is built from a Howa 1500 short action, with. Brux 26” 4grove 1-8 barrel, l have no problem with Case fit in mag well. I once had a magazine in it and it was still good. I Love my Howa and it has been shooting circle around some, 700s and a few custom builds. Other than the barrel it is a stock rifle.

I am glad to see you building a Howa, my 47 is a stock 1500, with a Brux 26” 1-8 and it shoots REALLY great. I shoot mostly 130-140 grns Berger bullets, with no length problems. I put a mag well in it and it had 0 length problems, but I went back to original box clip, and still cycle rounds well. I think Howa is very Under rated. Enjoy

Hi,

Once this rifle is done, and I get to a range, I will report back on how it does. Trying to decide on what bullets to start with, since initial firing will be at just 100 yards, and then out to 300. Thinking Sierra MatchKings in 120 and/or 123 grains, 120 grain Berger, or 123 Lapua Scenars. Unsure at present on twist, either 1:8 or 1:8.5.

I may very well use a Brux as well. I am pleased you have no OAL problems. Glad to see another Howa user...we are kinda' scarce!

By the way, I did add a bolt-on bolt knob to my Howa. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C9SK44H/?tag=accuratescom-20. The longer review is mine.

My Brux is a #5 4R 26" 1-8 twist, I mostly shoot 140 Grn Bergers, and it groups well out to 1000yrds. matter of fact I would say a ground hog at 1000 is in big trouble. I just seem to get better groups with the bigger bullets, and I have noticed at 500 the 140s hit about 1-1.5" higher than the 130 bergers. I assume a bit better BC. I have also shot the Lapua 139 grn Scenars, and they are right with the Bergers. Enjoy Bob

.187 fb puts the 130 VLD at 2.830 touching the lands and fits the AI mags and Rem box mag. ,,also puts the bullet above the donut area

Love it, are you going to use the mini action, I want to build one for my 9year Old Grandson, With a youth Stock. I think Howa is missing the BOAT by not building that in a youth model. The 6.5 Grendal is very under reated
