Amazing...

So, my 45-100 (.45-2.6") chambered Shiloh MRR is being shipped in a week or so.
Time to get the reloading equipment. My first check was with a well known specialist for BP stuff in northern Idaho. Shock&Surprise! Lyman dies are listed at $156.19, and to add insult to injury are "Out of Stock"! Then add the 6% sales tax.

Next stop shopping, I check Natchez Shooters Supply on their website. Same SKU Lyman three die set are on sale for $42.08, and in stock. Regular price was $68.17, go figure.

Prices might vary a few dollars on identical items, but nearly $90 difference...?

2019 is going to be a very interesting year.

I sure as hell do not mind paying a few dollars more for local products for sale buy local business guys. But as you posted some of these markups for identical items is beyond price gouging.
A wise man once told me .
" Pigs get fat... Hogs get slaughtered. "

I know that "local", as in Mom and Pop stores, operate on an inventory system based on market demand. Those products that are easily and quickly turned over, are priced more in line with "The Big Boys".. However, once you get to "specialty items" or "no large demand" items, having ANY in stock for the Mom and Pop store, is usually done as a courtesy to their customers who may buy items of relative rarity. It costs them more to stock and keep these "nearly non-salable" items than it's worth. However, to a "Midway" or "Sinclair", their chances of making a sale on these items are greatly increased, ergo a more "normal" price. Just something to think about...

I think in the near future brick and mortar stores will be a thing of the past. Some click and mortar stores will make it or last longer. But I have to tell you, I don't mind paying a bit more at the local store for a product, just to have the store there. However, I find myself looking online first due to the issues with the walk in stores. For example; I needed a no frills dark colored zip hoodie for the cooler days at work. On the way home from work I stop in Walmart, Kohls and Target. None of these stores had what I wanted, either $40 sports team logo stuff or garbage. I went home got on the net and typed black zip hoodie large, in 3 minuets, amazon prime Haynes heavy cotton zip hoodie, $16 delivered in 2 days. Wife goes into Nordstroms, finds a top she likes but they dont have it in the color and size she wanted in stock. They tell her come back next Thursday when they get stock, maybe they will have it. So she buys online. Now what they should have told her was buy it and we will have it shipped to your house in 24 hours. So, I see all these places except Walmart going belly up in the future.

Buffalo Arms is NOT a "Mom & Pop" company. Black Powder firearms and accessories are what they specialize in; to the tune of several million dollars in annual sales.
I ordered my 45-100 dies Friday from Natchez. They came today for approximately 1/4th of what BA wanted in their online catalog Fifteen minutes before I called Natchez.

This is a cost-based rant about the same product...

Drop tubes, blow hose. Been there done that. Had a Shiloh Sharps years ago. 2 year wait time for delivery. Got lucky and got mine with only a 14 month delay.

Too many of the local larger store that will cease to exist because of shortsightedness. They hire people with no experience because they can hire them, I don’t like going to the larger local places for the simple reason that they should know something about their product and they don’t; I know more about it than they do. The true mom and pop stores are different; they know what they have, how to use it, where to get it if they don’t have. They also contribute to the local school programs. Their kids know your kids. Maybe I’m too small town America.

Even if it was a local, small time place I’m not paying damn near 4x the price of what I can get it for elsewhere. I’m all for supporting local and willing to pay a small premium but there are limits.
Really like our local store and the owner but I have to say we are paying a premium for things. Powder is $39.99 were one hour away it is $26 bucks. 20 Moa rings and bases were $185 online his price was $270. I'm with you ,have to draw the line somewhere.

I am guilty of online shopping to save money. One day, we will all regret it. We won't be able to drop into the local store to shoot the breeze, or pick up something we need that we can't wait on. Most importantly, the "biggies" like Amazon and Walmart will come to dominate our lives, every aspect. And they are already "too big to fail", too important to the economy. Like other industries (Wells Fargo comes to mind), they will abuse their power and never suffer the smallest punishment. If they decide to stop carrying shooting products (or anything else they decide we shouldn't have) and the small guy is gone - what then? Won't happen you think, but take a look at Dicks and Walmart concerning modern sporting rifles.

I do realize Amazon is advertised on this site, but I avoid them like poison.

You made the right decision. We all spend money, the bulk of us too much on this hobby.
There comes a time when spending a certain percentage over best buy is just spending stupid money.

Most all the local type shops around here now are also pawn shops. They are handy once in a while, but I don’t feel bad shopping elsewhere for the best deal.

I needed an idler arm for an f150 in November. Moog part same part number. It was a sunday so my local nap was closed. Advanced auto want 137 and change for said part . Rock auto 57 and change to my door . Same exact part number. I do understand that both places have overhead but is it really worth almost 3 times the cost. I waited 2 days while I finished up other work and still had money left for gun powder and wiskey

I fully understand people that are price shopping still have a auto repair shop that my son and a long time friend and mechanic operate and on a 100.00 part we might make 20.00 a three thousand Mtr we might mark it up 300.00 and if our customer's want to bring there own parts that is fine we tell them to buy either factory or quality name product and we inform them that it is your part and we are only responsible for the labor being done correctly, after being it the business for over 50 years. the one problem people have is when the part goes bad or is defective from the beginning they have to pay us the labor again and we have seen a number of parts fail both that we have purchased and the one customers have bought themselves.hope this clears some of the problems for both sides
