Timing Savage actions

On a positive note , I can tell you that Fred Moreo is THE foremost authority on All things SAVAGE ! I can also tell you that when Fred times and true's your action there is an unbelievable difference in the action from bolt lift , extraction , etc .........its really easy for some to bash Fred and Lisa but I can tell you from my own experience that they are absolutely wonderful people and do EVERYTHING in that shop by themselves and that is a tremendous amount of work ! ! Until you've tried running a shop yourself, with the volume of work they deal with , probably best to stay off the high horse ! I agree some things could be handled a little differently when looking in from the cheap seats but any and all work I could ever want or need done, that I wasn't equipped to do myself, with a savage would go to Fred Moreo ! ! I don't care how long it would take ! ! And as far as thinking the .357 case and the bearing are concerned , that has NOTHING to do with the machining needed for "Timing" the action. Thats done cnc , by only Fred and last I spoke to them it was only done so often given the set up time needed so I imagine it could take some time to get them. Mine took 4 months and I was not dissatisfied in any way ......it was a very special project and didn't disappoint !

Savage PTAs or any mass produced actions are just that, mass produced.

And just like small block chevys, hair dryers and toasters- some of them work better, some of them work not as great, but most of them work pretty well.

And as with anything else there are people who sell a product/service that claims to make them better.

Some are a little better than others.

I've worked with Sharp Shooter Supply (Fred) and Stockade (Kevin), have read with interest some of Mr. Lamberth's posts but have never worked with him.

SSS may be the pinnacle of Savage tech but their communication and customer service is lacking to say the least, as is often attested to.

Stockade has been great to work with, would recommend them without hesitation.

The Savage bolt is a pretty simple design, take it apart, put it together, see how it operates, smooth out the cocking ramp etc, may be something you can do at home.

Or you lay down your money and you take your chances.

"One way to improve the Savage Bolt Lift; is get a Nate Lambeth Bolt lift kit,"
That's the one! I couldn't remember his name.
PTG also makes one that they refer to as a Lambeth. They call it the Savage Bolt Accessory Kit w/o handle, in their catalog. I installed one but don't notice much of a difference.

He ground my fireing spring to help with bolt lift
That took away my lock time
The handle moves on the body wher it is placed when tight effect the timing

I set my firing pin bout .015 longer I shoot only BR primers, that ended my light strikes. works for me

yep Fred does great work.

i sent him a dual port savage target action. had it timed and trued, evolution trigger and bedded into his dog tracker stock. that bedding was a work of art and the action cycled like a different action. the only savage trigger that i have been pleased with.

Fred is a true craftsman. you can't rush perfection. Comunication with them was very easy. they did everything i asked

and the proof is on the target.

I have had SSS chamber a number of barrels and they all shoot fantastic!
I have also had Fred T&T my PTA as well as install an evolution trigger. Couldn't be happier! I had some one else T&T another PTA and it came back better, but not as good as Fred's.

No matter how many folks complain, I have dealt with Fred's wife many times and have been treated fairly.
Only problem is some time they get backed up and time drags. Only time they took a long time for me was once when I told them it was not a hot item and they could use it for fill work. No complaints here!

I run a bolt handle from extreme hardcore gear, I believe it's a tad longer increasing leverage.
I'm also interested in polishing the cocking ramp and rear bolt baffle as well as installing Kevin's small disc with the ball bearing however to make that as effective as possible I believe shortening the BAS to match the disc thickness is in order.
Do you think I'm on the right track?
The longer handle does help! Also you can add spacers/washers to the BAS if you don't want to grind it down. I would however polish the face of the BAS so it's smooth and shiny. I found the Thrust bearing worked better than the "lift kit" I got. I haven't seen Nate's (PTG) kit in person so I cannot comment on those.

Bolt lift is the amount of friction it takes to cock the action savage has a heavy fire pinion you
Can find springs that have the same pressure and don’t stack the pressure
And you can also remove the friction
By the use of a bearing
I. Use a flat caged thrust bearing from transmission

Care to show pics and give part number ?

I am not going to read through every post as it appears to be mostly bashing SSS. I have had nothing but good luck with them if you are patient but to those who have not I am sorry. As for timing an action it has absolutely zero to do with how the bolt will slide in the raceway and everything to do with getting rid of cock on close due to poor factory timing and overcocking as well as bolt lift. Savages are not near as bad as 700s in this regard and to get the most out of either action they need to be timed. I think most people understand truing but very few actually understand timing. As far as I am concerned Fred is the best at timing a Savage followed very closely by Kevin at Stockade Stocks. Kevin is easier to communicate with. The only person I really hear talking about timing a 700 is Alex Wheeler. The difference between an untimed action and a properly timed is night and day period.

It not only the bolt that the problem
I have many of hours in mine
But I won’t do someone else’s
I can lift mine with two fingers and have the accurate trigger at 5 oz or less

I have found that the PTG Savage bolts are timed a lot better just by the way they are cut. I still feel have SSS do it is well worth the price and time but it is a great second option.
