Many / Any Service Rifle Shooters here ?

I cant see irons well at all, never really could (huge floaters) but shot XTC many years ago. Picked rifle back up about 7 years ago and been doing f class since I can use a scope, plus learning wind reading. When 4.5x scopes became SR legal, decided to build one on the AR platform (age has made it impossible to see the iron sights on my Garand). Wound up building a complete and very reliable and accurate rifle and scope for less than the cost of an f class scope. I can shoot sling, or swap the sling adapter for a bipod and shoot tactical. I intend to do XTC and mid range prone.

You guys who haven't shot an accurate AR with a good trigger are missing out.

Got another one here. Probably a few lurkers hanging out, but active posters probably post over on usrifleteams.com as well if it involves SR shooting or XTC in general.

I wish is still shot the service rifle more. I getnin 1 or 2 local matches a year. I got bit by the Prone gun big after legging our and making the P100. I do miss the simplicity of the service rifle. Maybe this is a sign I need to drag the old girl out and shoot it more.

Started shooting service rifle in 1965 on USN teams and fired the last one in 1985. Wore out several 7.62 chambered Garand barrels. Was the first to shoot across the course with the M16 when it was declared legal for DCM matches in the 1971 Nationals. That year awarded the next to last solid 24k gold USN Distinguished Marksman badge (#162) struck back in the 1920's

I think you don't see as many threads on it because sling shooting (especially service rifle) isn't technically very intensive. You just buy the right gear and go shoot.
Many will disagree with that. There's more parts in the semiauto rifle that must go back into battery exactly the same way after each shot.

What about good ammo?

It's fairly easy and inexpensive to set up a service rifle that is fully capable of shooting 100 - 10x
100-10X at 1000 yards?

How you gonna test it? It will have to bench/machine test 20 shots at worst 1/2 MOA at 1000 to shoot that well slung up in prone with a 4.5 pound trigger. AR platform barrels are limited to 20 inches.

What is inexpensive if 20-shot 1/2 MOA at 1000 is needed?

The NRA service rifle record at 1000 is 200-14X, 70% in the 10" X ring. Shot once in 1989 and once in 2010. Not with off-dealer-shelf rifles and ammo.

Custom bolt gun and perfect handloads with scope 1000 yard record is 200-19X, only 1K record with at least one 100-10X I know of.

There’s some for sure. But it’s not terribly hard to build a NM AR and load it up with 77s over varget, which is 90% of the gear related knowledge you need to know.

True, for 600 yards and less. If it tests half MOA at those ranges. Regardless of how accurate it shoots, one could use it in benchrest matches. One gets to set their own objectives; shoot, compete or win.

Note the 22 caliber AR platforms were not totally competitive against 30 caliber service rifles at 1000 so in 2012, the US Army team got the NRA to add AR10 platforms in service rifles category. They had to handload Berger 185's hot enough to stay supersonic from 20 inch barrels to equal what the best match grade M1 and M14 rifles did with normal safe pressure handloads.

I shot SR for a couple of years, before the days of scopes. I shot it in my spare time and also spent a summer on the USMC rifle team. I moved over to match rifle after going distinguished.

There are plenty of XTC shooters and NRA highpower shooters on this forum to get answers to questions related to those disciplines.

Welcome aboard, this is a great forum.
