Plum stupid mistakes

muleman69

I was trying to whip out a few quick loads the other day and did a real stupid thing. Grabbed some brass and deprimed then measured case length ,trimed and beveled and deburred primed and powderd up. Went to seat bullet and it dropped in ,well you guessed it didn't bother to size. Most people would not tell on them selves but stupid is stupid. Figuring I should have a bit more tension I dumped and resized....lol

That's when you need a Redding type S neck bushing die with out using a de-priming mandrel. Not the original purpose but I suppose you could get by.

Ah that's funny right there!
I was building my cackalacky loads a couple weeks ago.
Decided to use my Redding S type neck die.
Robbed the .288 bushing outta my hornady
Match grade die. Upon seating bullets I noticed a very inconsistent seating depth after 5 rounds.
I pulled 2 bullets with fingers other 3 with cam lock puller.
Needless to say I swapped out bushing for a .286 and pulled pin. Good to go.

I was reloading a few the other day trying to find my best shoulder or .oo2 bump, so I would set the die then chamber the brass, and measure, then I got close .003 so I turned the die a bit went back to chamber, wouldn't chamber went back measured 3 thou too long, so I went back again turned die, sized, went to chamber again no go, went back again, turned die went back to chamber again no go,I was turning die instead of moving the lock ring, this all took bout 2 hrs of scratchin my head

that sounds messed up,,

Fortunately, the worst I've ever done is to miss a case when filling with powder. Then you get a ping and sometimes have to find a cleaning rod to knock the bullet out of the rifling. Sometimes it just falls out.

It makes you very careful about checking each case in the future.

I've also started a primer or two upside down but always caught it as it happened. PITA to have oil the primer, wait and then deprime.

Not reloading, but how about being 3/4 mile into the woods on opening day, load your rifle, forget that it is "controlled feed" and add that last cartridge ahead of the bolt rather than from the magazine. Guarantee it can only be cleared with a cleaning rod, which is of course that 3/4 mile back at camp.

I have had those kind of days

I can and have been "Mr Wrong Way" when making scope windage adjustments. I seem to do ok on the elevation.

While I've developed a number of fail safe procedures like, have only the powder I'm using at the time on top of the bench, check each case for powder fill before seating bullet, check scale setting, double check load data, etc. .... However when I've made mistakes it's because I've rush the process or my wife is chattering in my ear.

Remedy: Problem 1 - quality not quantity - don't rush it! If you don't have time wait until you do. Bad weather days are a good time to stock up on reloads unless you believe in the "cold weld" phenomenon.;)

Remedy: Problem 2: stop and smile at wife and let her get it all out - ignoring her will only create more chatter with the possibly of loss of dinner.:(

Just an observation and a question about people in my short 70 years on the planet:
Who are the "SMARTEST" people in the world?
Those people who have made THE MOST mistakes aren't they?
If I think about it, any person who says "I made a mistake" is also saying, inherent in that statement, "I LEARNED something" aren't they?

Therefore the STUPIDEST people are those who never make any mistakes aren't they? for they have never learned anything.

All I know is the more I learn the less I know...LOL

Anybody relate?

I concur

Making mistakes is part of life (and I believe part of reloading), hopefully we are able to learn from our mistakes and move on not repeating them.
