Obermeyer Barrels

For some time Boots was making 8.4 and/or 8.75 6.5mm twist rates(durn I make a lot of spelling errors, etc anymore). He would make what you wanted but that was his 'standard' or what he thought sufficient for 6.5 twist. The ones I purchased from him were 8.75 and later he was doing 8.4 to Bugholes etc. He himself used 8.75 in his modified 22/250 case expanded up to 6.5 and shooting 142gr for 600yd matches. Cannot remember exact specs but remember him saying near identical to a 6XC but .264 caliber.

Haven't heard back from recent email as to how he has been doing but this spring he was in rehab for a stroke and his daughter said it was "taking some time". Hopefully but not sure if any Oby barrels made by Boots hiself will happen? Hope so for Boots' sake.

Finally caught and corrected all my errors in spelling and twist vs. 'bore' diameter.

As I have understood, Mr. Obermeyer sold his 5R process and tooling to Krieger Barrels and retired. I had heard that he was ill and hospitalized with a stroke a while back too.

Most if not all of his barrels are tight bored. 6.5 cal .254/.264, 30 cal .298/308 etc...

are they any good?im looking at a 6.5 creedmore 8.4 twist
Are they stainless steel?

Barrett "boots" Obermeyer wrote the book on Building barrels. He lives hear 16 miles from me and has been doing this since the 60's. He does mostly gov. work and has been for most of those years. Magazines have articles on his work. I have two. He built me a new barrel in the early sixties for my Rem .760 slide in the .35 Whelen with a 14 twist using 4140. Later on, Remington commercialized it in the 760. It is true what has been written above. He has taught most others the trade. He built the first firearm for the .220 Russian cartridge after we sent some people "over there" to try and find an AK 74
to study it. What was brought back was some .220 Russian ammunition , not a firearm.
He was contacted to build a rifle for it to test the cartridge. He did that on a 788 action, and had it finished in short order, ( after contacting people in the business about making dies and etc. Yes, he made the 1st 5R. My understanding is the AK 74 is 5R .
The man is a walking legend, and I am proud to have known him , his parents, and brother when they owned the sporting goods store here in town called "The Trading Post".

I've had a 30cal blank in 11.25 twist that Boots made several years ago. Just haven't had a need for it yet.
He may have been the first to do it on a rifle barrel, but the 5R was done on some military cannon barrels. I used to have a drop from a approx 25MM barrel that was 5R.

That My Friend is a under statement...Boots made Cm and SS , The Best of the Best. Krieger is licensed to make them . Boots 5R is Registered .
Other 5R are not the same angles not saying they don't work , they do,
