Talk me into a 30BR

Theres just something about this case that facinates me looking at pictures. I like small cases, and my 6BR is amazing...

I got most things to do a 30BR and reload it already, and a box of 6BR brass just sitting collecting dust...

Whats the recoil like?

Whats the max kill range for deer? I know its dead nuts accurate 200-300 yards, what do they do at 400? I got other guns if I needed to shoot further... most shots are 100-200 anyways... seem like itd be a deer killer round... 6BR is...

What kinda velocity could i expect from a 16-18 inch barrel and 110-118gr bullets?

Hunting bullets in this grain range?

17 twist?

30BR has been a tick on my side for a long time... I like the grendel case and 30 major, but Itd cost me more to go that route as I dont have a ppc bolt face...

Its a paper puncher with light for caliber bullets. I wouldnt even consider it for deers or to shoot past 200. It punches dots out of targets real well though

I'm just in the process of putting one together but after plugging a few numbers into a stability calculator, I'd be inclined to speed up the twist a bit on a hunting rifle. There's not a lot of big game bullets to choose from that'll stabilize in a 17t.

Standard reamers such as the Robinette form which most everybody uses have nil freebore so are limited to short flat-base bullets or else they end up seated way too deep. You could use 125/130gn PSPs designed for single-hot pistol hunting if such bullets still exist, but most normal jobs even lighter models would need a bit of 'throating' as well as a suitable twist.

It didn't take anything to talk me in to a 30BR. I already had one in the works. Fast forward to last Sunday...the gent who's making mine let me shoot his. My first 5 shot group out of an unfamiliar gun resulted in a 2 flat give or take a couple thou. Of course, this is a 13.5 pound bench gun. Sounds like you are looking for something else. I'm looking forward to shooting mine next year.

The Sierra 125 gr. Pro Hunter flat based bullet #2120 is a great choice. It's about .885 long....I'd likely opt a 14 twist so as to keep other bullet possibilities open.

And while it's mainly used for 100-300 BR competition, it's not like the bullet just decides to ignore the laws of physics (and ballistics) and suddenly drops to the ground after 200 yards.

I know I don't want anyone shootin' at me with one waaaaay past 600 yards.

I too am fascinated with the 30 Br case and potential as a combo long barrel life practice round/potential hunting round. I have a Kreiger barrel with 15T reamed for installation on an Atlas action ready to install, just need to finish load development on a 7 Br before I switch out the barrels. Look forward to sharing data/results on both the 7 Br and 30 Br with hunting bullets/loads.

Don’t do it! The recoil is pretty stout and to run ‘em right, ya need to buy custom (expensive) bullets! Just shoot a 308 with 125s! You’ll save money!

Sierra makes a few bullets, and hornady makes a few that are in the weight range as well... i dont know about lengths though and ogive that the round would like...

And, I've killed dear with target bullets. It's not like they aren't lethal

Although the 30BR uses less powder, all other things being equal, the 30BR can push a 125 grain bullet at least as fast as the 260 Remington can, probably even faster.

As a matter of fact, a 30BR topped off with the 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip would be perfect for deer hunting where I live.

Too many other cheaper calibers to kill deer with. It took me a while to get a load tuned for my Robinette reamed 30BR 17twist and it shoots bug holes at 100 yds. Have no where to shoot 200 or 300 BR so I have no idea what it will do at those distances. I shoot 112 and 117 Bib bullets. The fellow that turned me on to 30BR uses his as a test bed for his company's shooting industry products. He hasnt found anything better.
