284 throat wear.

What would be considerd normal throat wear for a 284 with about 700 rounds. Powder’s used have been H4831, IMR4451 and RL-23. Pressure is by no means excessive and 5 shot stings only. Thanks. E

My 284 has 1525rds down the barrel and I just checked it because I was going to have it set back. I discovered that it has only a little over .015 throat wear. I checked it three times and I get between .015 and .017 I have not got it very hot but have shot it in two comps but no more than a 12rd string at one time. My last 284 I got just over 3000rds out of it with a set back at around 1800rds.....

There is no "normal" throat wear. It entirely depends upon how you use the rifle. If you fire one round per year at a deer, almost nothing. My F-Class .284 Shehane barrels erode ~.002" per 100 rounds. Most are somewhere between.

I apologize fellas, i completely forgot about this thread. The reason for me asking is after checking it the other day the lands went from 2.545” to 2.580” (touching) Obviously I’ve got a measurement wrong somwhere but I was really carefull getting that initial measurement and again at about 300 rounds. The reason for the post was curiousity and to confirm my thought that the throat wouldnt normaly move that much. E

Lots of variables. Main variable is the quality of the steel in the barrel. How well you clean your barrel, assuming it is cleaned at an acceptable frequency rate. Typically can expect about .002-003" of throat erosion every 100 rounds with a max load of like H4831SC. This is based upon MY experience.
